  • Keyed Axle washers

I have just been informed by Univair that the Taylorcraft axle washers are no longer available from them. I also could not locate an equivalent washer at my local NAPA store the last time I looked. Does anyone have any spares of these or know of an automotive (NAPA) part number or a source for a couple?

      Me too, Bob:
I got washers from UNIVAIR, then returned them. The UNIVAIR guy said they had checked into getting some made the correct size, but the volume was so low that it wouldn't pay. I went to NAPA, they didn't have them, but an old timer there said he remembered when Fords used those washers on their axels. The NAPA geezer sent me to this greasy old truck repair place and they actually had lots of keyed washers...all of them too big. I called Skybound in Georgia and they didn't have them but the lady there said they'd had plenty of call for them and they were looking into a source.

Finally, I made a pair by silver soldering a little tab onto a non-keyed washer.

Thanks for posting the drawing. I was looking too. I have just bought a couple of Massey Ferguson tractor front axle washers off Ebay (Ebay.co.uk). I just measured them - they are the same id and thickness and 1.5" od. They should fit ok.

Am probably getting some parts water-jet cut soon for another project. I think it will be worth filling in the holes between the bgger parts with some of these washers for future use. I'll advise if/when I have them.

        regards

Say, that reminds me. I get parts laser cut out of Stainless steel all of the time. I could easily include a handful of these to match the drawing. The only groaner is that I use either 16 ga (.060") or 11 ga (.120"). The drawing says 0.095". I have an 11ga project coming up. So I think I'll try it and see how they come out in 11ga.

That was my glitch as well. Who the heck has .095 stock? I guess if you did 'em out of .090 and then cad plated them they might come out to that.

Never heard of 13 ga. I see it listed in charts, but who uses it?

I think the heavier ss ought to be fine.

I might have my local water jet guy do some out of .090 4130 just to see...

How about just running them through a surface grinder if the thicker ones won't fit to bring them down to .095?

That would work, Hank. I did that to get my new front butt fitting side plates down to the correct thickness.

"new front butt fitting side plates"

I'm not even going to ask.

For those of you having parts made at a local metal fab shop, unless they are your freinds I wouldn't tell them that they are for an airplane. Our insurance company excludes liability coverage for any parts made for aircraft! In order to obtain insurance we would need a large volume of aircraft parts manufacturering to make it worth while. I just stick to making my own parts either on one of our press brakes, shears or laser!!!

Picked these up today. I made the AutoCad file from the dimensions posted here, so they should be good, but I'll check on my BL-65 before I send any out. I'll blast the first batch and stick them in the plating tank tomorrow. This isn't going to be fast, but it'll be steady.

I also hope to mold the sand for a casting for a hubcap press tomorrow.

                      Big day.

Sure hope I don't get distracted. Damn the ADD.

Isn't going to be fast? Do you have ANY idea how slow most of us are? You are progressing so fast most of us can't keep up!
Don't forget to leave some work for us to do in case our mechanics want to show them as "owner produced". We need to do a drawing or the QA on the parts (probably do a material hardness test and dimensional check). They look so good I doubt we will get a chance to do any of the actual manufacture.

wow!! Mine are starting to get paper thin. I have to be very careful when doing my wheel bearings or those suckers will cut me! Those look great!!!!

They are beautiful! As for owner produced, if they come as cut out, there will be work needed to be done before use, i.e. dimension check, grind/sand off sharp edges, etc. I think we have a winner here, lets do what is necessary to make sure all who need a set can get them. I think I want two sets myself!
