  • Photo Shoot - the new 43122

after about 7 or 8 months out of service we finally got 43122 back flying a few weeks ago. While it was down we rejuvenated the dope and repainted the trim colors.

pics shot today at an old 2500' dirt strip near Casa Grande, AZ that Ag pilots use to refill their hoppers.

      Nice pics!
Does that snow white paint in the Arizona sun make you think twice about the white balance in your photos?
I realize you are using cameras a lot nicer than my Instamatic, but hey, inquiring minds want to know.

actually on these shots I put the camera in program mode and let it handle everything for me. I used a Panasonic LX3 point and shoot.

How much time did it take to rejunvenate?
Rejuvenating took about 4 hours on a Saturday and 4 hours on a Sunday. REALLY simple to do. We washed the plane thoroughly with some soapy water. Then took MEK and a rag to the areas where the paint had cracked.... used the MEK to melt the cracks and smooth them out. Hit those areas with a small touch up spray gun and white dope. Wet sanded the entire plane lightly with 320 and rinsed with water. Taped off the windows and other pertinent parts and proceeded to spray the rejuvenator with a twin turbine HVLP gun. Rejuvenator is SUPER easy to work with. it's thin so you got to be careful not to get runs but it dries in about 15 minutes with a nice even semi gloss sheen.

Our fabric and paint was done in 1971 if you can believe it. Irish linen and Butyrate dope. it sat in a garage for 30 years which is the only reason why it was as good as it was, but the paint was very flat and faded and quite brittle. The rejuvenator worked miracles. Paint is very pliable now. I have no doubt it'll last us at least another 3-5 years if we keep the covers on it during the summer.

From the boot cowl forward is all new automotive single stage acrylic enamel paint. We also used the automotive paint to refinish the prop. What a difference painting the prop made. it used to be an ugly faded gray.

                It really looks good!

But, is it white or Diana Creme? From the photos it looks like insignia blue and diana creme which is what mine was painted, almost the same scheme, that I bought in 1964 and sold in 1969 (big mistake) I plan on refinishing the one I am restoring now in diana creme and blue.

The white is mix between Daytona White and Juneau White. About 80% Juneau. We had to custom mix the two to get a color that was close to the original for the repaired areas. No telling what it was actually painted with 30+ years ago.

Are you planning on having it at the Cactus fly-in the first weekend of March?
I am going to try to bring 34237, weather permitting. Maybe we can have a nice line of TCrafts...

Did you remove the wings for sanding and rejuvenation and how much rejuvenator did it take to do the job?

Yes indeed. I'm going to be out there most likely.

Yes, we pulled the wings off. We bought a 5 gallon pail of rejuvenator and I'd guess there is still 2.5 gallons left.
