  • Propeller hub removal - tapershaft A-65

Help! Last time I tried to remove my propeller hub from the tapershaft A-65, the split ring that bears the load of the threaded mechanism when loosening the hub started pulling out of its position instead of the taper fit to the crank shaft releasing! Must have been torqued on too tight last time. Now that the split ring pulls out before the hub releases from the crank shaft, how do I get the hub off the crankshaft? Does someone repair these prop hubs? Thanks, Bob

I insert a small screwdriver between th ends of the snap ring, and use a heat gun to warm the hub. Works like magic. George

It's a common problem and isn't from over tightening. There have been prior posts with drawings of a tool that is inserted in the gap in the ring. If the ring is kept spread it won't pop out and the prop will come off. A little heat will also help, but DON'T use a torch! It doesn't take much heat to damage a wood OR metal prop and open flames can leave your plane a pile of ash. If you can't put your hand on the hub you may be too hot. I have an old Mono-kote gun, but have never needed it. The ring spreader has never failed yet.

I think it was Doug Combs or Steve Krog who wrote up an article about making the special tool. This took works 100% perfectly! A small amount of heat (hair dryer, not much more than that) and this special home-made tool is the right ticket. Trying to unscrew it without the snap ring held in place is BAD, it will pop out the snap ring, round off the corners, etc.

The spec also requires to torque the hub to 200+ ftlb, I ususally dont go over a hundred because I have seen toooooo many cracked hubs. Tim

Thank you all. Now that it is cold and wet in New Mexico, good time to go to the hanger and apply some heat! The attached article from Rob is just great too! Thanks all! Bob
