Re: Wing N-Numbering
Doc,
I have the original wing and rudder lettering information(size and placement) and diagrams for how to mask the letters to paint (that Tom Baker sent for my 41 )and can make copys @ mail them to you if that will help.I draw them with a soft pencil ,mask and paint with Aerothane and it seems to work very well. The big wing numbers look nice but you have to be careful whose house you buzz-in case of grumpy neighbors.

Re: Wing N-Numbering
Seems like I used Tom's dimensions on my 41 too. It matched pretty well to the old dimensions I found in some antique instructions. DEFIANTLY paint the numbers on the wing. They are so big it's easy and they look great. The original pictures I found for the tail numbers were a different font before the war but truthfully I haven't done a careful study of the fonts after. A stencil makes the tail numbers pretty easy. The same place that makes vinyl stick-on numbers can make you a negative to use as a stencil too and that way the trim color matches the numbers.
If I can hand paint the Logo, most ANYBODY can paint wing numbers with masking, and the practice will let you do a great job on the tail numbers.

Re: Wing N-Numbering
After YEARS with the "Great Pumpkin" (voted ugliest Taylorcraft in the world several years in a row) I want EVERYONE to know when I fly over with my repainted swan. From International Harvester Tractor Orange with Forest Green trim to the original Taylorcraft Ivory with deep Maroon Duotone. She is a thing of beauty now, even with the wings off.

One technique you might consider, is to spray a clear coat over the masked area before shooting the final color. The clear spray will seal the masking tape edge and prevent any color bleeding. It also gives you a second chance to see if any tapes have lifted.
This is a method was used extensively by artists creating Hard-edge paintings.

Re: Wing N-Numbering
If you're lazy like me, you can give your local sign guy a copy of Amarillo font:
and the 2" high specs for your numbers for the tail.
This is how mine turned out:
As you can see, the Pontiac red on the stripe is a little different from the red used in the vinyl in this light, but in normal, bright light it's closer. As was helpfully pointed out here on the forum, you can paint the vinyl, too or use a vinyl mask to shoot the color. Lots of options! The font above can be downloaded pretty easily, though.

Josh: It certainly looks better than the last time I saw it in College Station! I am glad the repairs worked out for you.
