tubes for Shinn wheels

ok... seriously.... what the hell does it take to get tubes that will work on the Shinn wheels?

bought tubes from AS&S and Wag-Aero and neither work. The stems on those come out at 90° from the tube. The tubes we currently have for our Shinn wheel have the stems at an oblique angle and fit the wheels perfectly.

The 90° stems from AS&S and Wag Aero are a joke. no way in God's green earth they will fit.

So, where do you guys get tubes?!!!!

I am pretty sure that I have bought tubes for 6:00 tires (and the tires, for sure) from Desser. Fourth page, Trade-a-Plane. They list tubes. I'm real happy with my 8:00 retreads from them.

I use a 1" cheap plastic tire valve extension (available at Pep Boys Aerospace or Wal-Mart Aircraft Supply) on the Schrader valve, installed before assembling onto the wheel. This allows it to stick out far enough to put the air chuck on.

OK, hard for me to admit (you guys know I want to do EVERYTHING on my 41baby) but I paid an IA to put the new Dresser tubes and tires on my wheels. Three or four weeks of PURE FRUSTRATION trying to get the vallve stem through the wheels enough to get the tire inflated.
The IA took both wheels apart, dusted everything with baby powder, put the tubes in the tires and slid the stem through the hole, holding it with the niftiest little tool ever while he put the wheel halves together then inflated the tire. The whole job took less than 15 minutes for BOTH TIRES!
I WANT one of those little tools, except it must be older than John McCain! Anybody know where you can get one?
If you want your tires mounted, find an old school A&P or IA and I bet he will have the tool in the bottom of his box.

Your old tubes have molded with age to fit the wheel. The biggest problem with most new tubes is the valve stem is to big around. (I can relate to that)Pick up a valve core removal tool from the auto parts store. It will have a threaded peice that you can screw into the valve stem to hold it in place until you get ready to put air in the tire. You also might be able to find some real thin nuts that will screw on the valve stem to hold it in place. We had one airplane with the nuts installed so the stems could not disappear, but had to grind on the air chuck to make it work. Tom

All three of my BC12s had the thin nuts on the valve stems. Don't know where I first learned of the baby powder thing, but it really works well.

Never tried them but I have some plastic-screw-on extensions like Bill mentioned. Suspect they would hold the stem in place. Probably came from Kragen or Autozone AC supply. I think I have seen them in Chromed metal also--have to check that out.

Always figured the thin nuts were standard and the tube would likely creep and rotate without them.

Yea, my IA said he was sorry he couldn't find any plain talc for my wheels. The rubber is going to smell like a (clean) babies back side forever.

Of course that isn't a BAD smell, just strange for an airplane.


Now I stand back and watch people walk up to my plane, bend WAAAAY over, and sniff the tires. Got to get my camera ready.

Baby powder works just fine and gives your airplane that "new plane" smell! But if you want "unscented" tire talc, Spruce has it for $7.95, part# 17-250. That's what I've got at the hangar at the moment. Threw it in on a order when I needed other things.

A bit of plain old corn starch will do the job. An old trick from an old IA..
It's cheap, and doesn't have any odor.......

Some baby powders contain cornstarch too so if you want only the powdered talc rock better read the label. I don't see the scent as being an issue. Ever smell the air coming out of a tire??? A little perfume scent would be good! And an innertube should always be powdered in my opinion no matter whether it is going in an airplane, truck, tractor, bicycle or whatever. That powder is the lubricant that allows the tube to adjust itself inside the tire.

The baby powder I have is left over from when my kids were babies. They are in their late 30's now. Works fine, lasts a long time, and smells good too.

I'll have to check for corn starch. Cant have any microbes growing in my wheels, chuckle.

I looked all over for those thin check nuts for my valve stems, and finally found them at a motorcycle shop. They had some old nuts in a parts bin, and gave me all they had for free. Try your local motorcycle shops, but if you find a better source, do let us all know.
