I thought there was an old thread on this; yes the stem was special way back then , I have a stem tool on a thin cable that screws into the valve stem then I pull it through and put the thin nut on; I have them from years ago . they are a motorcycle item. You can also use a METAL extension taht is avaliablel a lot of places. Tire talc is cheap , check with any tire store. the other stuff will work too. I use Dessler
The extensions available at my local farm supply/avaiton parts store are this cheap plastic POS ($2.50 for 4, don't waste your money), and a beautiful brass machined delight called a Milton 442 ($5.00 for 4). The brass unit, on the right, has knerling on the base, a threaded top to fit a dust cap and is easily thin enough to screw down into the valve stem hole on the Shinn wheels. Nice unit.
