The balance "not weight and balance" of how the airplane flies is better with the short mount from what I've heard. It's harder to get in all the accessories in with the short mount. Tom
I have a short mount 85. If you are not putting in starters and such stuff I think the short is "just long enough," and isn't that the desired size? I would advise against using Eisemann mags with a short mount thought, unless you are just crazy in love with them (like me), or you like to pull engines. They are a tight fit.
Question: Where do people get the cowlings for "long" mounts?
DC
The "short mount" very likely flies better, handles better, etc.
It is a VERY tight fit with Eisemanns, we had to adjust the firewall on my airplane using a sledgehammer. There is not enough room to remove the mag. There is no room to move the engine forward in the short cowling (for more mag clearance), not even 1/4 inch.
I suspect the correct way MECHANICALLY is to put about a 1 inch spacer behind the engine mount pads, and then rivet in a one inch wide extension onto the rear edge of the nose bowl and move the Dzus fasteners.
Unfortunately this would require you to make the necessary adjustments to the paperwork aspect, whether that be a CIA deniable stealth mission, a "minor alteration" from a friendly IA, or an uphill battle with the FSDO.

I have a short mount with an 0-200, slick mags and a B&C starter, that after 30 years of hand proping, its is like magic. It is so nice to have my feet on the rudder pedals then the engine starts, after having to jump in and try to get my feet on the pedals before I hit a tree or whatever, because the wind is blowing me into a bank on the river. I guess I am not as fast getting in as I used to be. The short mount works good.
I stand corrected on the starter on a short mount. I did not know one would fit, but then I have never owned a T with a starter, or for that matter, even seen one. Sounds wonderful, but it would probably put mine over gross with full gas. Chuckle.

If you stick with the short mount on an O-200 or 90-14, your engine will move foreward about 5/8", if you have the 85-12, its the same. I have an O-200 converted to a -8 with no accessories, so I hand prop....I am considering installing one with a starter and mounting an oddsey battery on the firewall. The front left baffle needs to be modified to clear the nosebowl with the O-200, I am also running the Aeronca Hanlon Wilson mufflers. I sure love the heat. Most other things will clear once you have the baffling issue cleared up. Your weight and balance will be an issue, I would not want to do stalls with 200# of baggage in the back with the shor mount but it will fly straight and level...Good luck in your decision...Tim
Dennis I used the short mount on my plane with a starter, alternator. and bendix mags, luscombe exhaust. The starter and alternator are B&C products and are the only one that will fit on a short mount.
