I need help!! I just installed new brake linings, new brake shoes. new return springs, new wedges and adjuster bolts. After installing the brake assembly, I attempted to install the wheel , but it would not fit over the brake shoes. I had the adjusters completely loose. I then used an automotive hose clamp around the brake shoes as tight as I could get it , and the wheel reluctantly went over the shoes...But the wheel would only turn with great force........I bought all the parts from Skybound and had to return one of the shoes to get "rebent" as it didn't have enough arc. The others seemed to be OK....What do I do now? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Don

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
Don:
Can you accurately measure the thickness of the new linings? Perhaps with a micrometer? Did the wheel drum slide over the shoes when you tried to push the wheel onto the axle, or was it hard work? With the adjusters backed right off?
If the linings are to spec (1/8" thick), then it may be worth fitting the old wedges & adjusters (the ones you removed) to give a bit more "slack" to the system. Try that & tell us how you get on.
To be honest, sounds like the linings are too thick.

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
Hi Rob, I think you are right about the linings being too thick. They are 9/64 inch thick, and it was very difficult getting the linings over the shoes. The adjusters were loose, but I will try the old ones. I am using the old wedges, because Skybound didn't have any. What are my options if the old adjusters don't solve the problem? Don

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
Hi Don,
Can you install the old shoes and use them? They might be worn enough to fit.
I have a set of linings from Skybound that I have not installed yet, I wonder if I will have the same issue.
I suggest that you complain to Skybound. You just bought a set of new brakes and they do not function- that's poor performance from Skybound.
I think Univair has these parts too.

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
I had the same problem several years ago. I just put the drum in the lathe & turned the linings down a little. It didn't take much. Just what worked for me.Last edited by flylo; 07-02-2008, 17:47.Eric Richardson

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
Thanks guys for all the good advice and comments. I discussed the problem with Skybound and they said to ship the drums and shoes to them and they would fix the problem and pay for the shipping both ways. They want to stand behind their products and service, which I think is great. Again, thanks for all the help...

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
I make sure the wheel is proper specs before installing new linings, sometimes it needs a bit of truing up...... then make sure linings are proper thickness, grind down if necessary , If already installed it is bit more work but do it; they need to turn free, they will expand when hot and create a real problem.Taylorcraft Foundation, Inc

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
I have not been on the forum for a long time. Just getting to the point of putting my BC12D back together. Lots of cutting, welding, staightening and just clean up and sandblasting. Was looking for a source for brake linings and found what I was looking for in this blog. Thanks guys.

I agree with astjp2 put on grove disk brakes and have not looked back and as far as being heavy they added 6lbs total BUT THEY WORK EVERY TIME I USE THEM AND I DON"T HAVE TO ADJUST THEM AFTER I USE THEM THREE TIMES TO GET THEM TO STOP ME AGAIN1940 BLT/BC65 N26658 SER#2000

You use the brakes to stop the plane!
When did that start?
Doesn't it nose over? Do the axles bend?
Is that why that one landing gear was bent?

Re: New Brakes on my BC12D
I have never used the brakes to stop the plane either, HOLD it stopped maybe (if it actually stays fully stopped at full power for a full run-up there is probably something wrong with the engine). I do use them for tight steering but energy management is what it is all about on light planes.

I know you CAN get the brakes rigged to do the job, but I don't really need it, and if you have really good brakes you can put her on her nose pretty easy. Remember that two mains and the spinner is NOT a three point landing!
