Re: Wing Strut attach fitting A-A11 Inspection results
If anyone has any failure against this SB, but is reluctant, unwilling or unable to post the results of the failure, then may I offer the following service?
PM me (or email me) the results, and I will then post them under my name, with all names, serial numbers and N numbers "disidentified" so as to ensure anonymity from the source.
I think it is important that any failures are known about, even if it means a bit of jurisprudence to protect the identity of airplane & owner.
If that is still not good enough for some, then it may be an idea to email Andy McAnaul at the FAA directly, with a request for anonymity.

1946 BC 12D N622SE, Ser.#10786, never on floats or ski’s, completely restored in 2003 and always hangared. Struts were removed and strut fittings were cleaned and inspected per S B 2007-002. No cracks or corrosion found. The fittings were primed and painted as described in the A D. New struts installed and aircraft was returned to service by A&P on Nov. 29, 2007.

Re: Wing Strut attach fitting A-A11 Inspection results
How can I make it any clearer, do the inspection per the SB........ I believe that will comply with the AD ( if there is one).
I am 90% it will comply, I am 99.9 % it will become an AD...... soon!!
Please keep this thread for data input......

Re: Wing Strut attach fitting A-A11 Inspection results
After the strut AD my AP/IA does not want to do anything other than a visual inspection with the strut fitting until a DEFINITE AND FINAL AD is released. Obviously if we look at it and see a safety issue, we will take it out of service but that is unlikely on a landplane (never on skis or floats) that has been hangered since its restoration.
I will post once we know something. When is the AD to be issued so we can review it?
Thanks for the update Forrest! Hopefully with people for you working closely with the FAA this one will be clearer and more reasonable from the beginning.

Re: Wing Strut attach fitting A-A11 Inspection results
Keep them coming, talked with Andrew McAnaul, the FAA engineer, this afternoon. He feels this will be VERY useful and we do intend to follow up with a similar strut inspection data base. ( using what is already there and expanding it) Keep this one for the attach fitting.
I truly believe we can extend the four years on the struts with proper documentation and data. Went out for pizza and found many have posted to this thread. Keep it up. He is very interested in the USAGE of the aircraft. Obviously the float ships will be watched very carefully.

Re: Wing Strut attach fitting A-A11 Inspection results
Only thing I wish I had at the time, was the camera adapter for my borescope. Could have taken pictures of the inside and put them in the logbooks. That way if he moves to who knows where and someone else has to look at it when the AD comes out, they wouldn't have to take my word for it. That airplane looked fine, and other than trimming some pinked edges of fabric it was open and free to drain if water had found a way into the fittings.

Re: Wing Strut attach fitting A-A11 Inspection results
Just cut and pasted part of my logbook entry........
Airplane has never been on floats.
I also went ahead and did part 2 and stripped and painted it. I figure I've done all I can that way, and when it was apart and easy. Unless the AD comes up with a repetitive interval or cut off the fittings and replace them, I won't have to screw with them again untill his 4 years on the struts runs out.
Airframe:
Date: 12/10/2007 Tach: 684.3
Tail #: N96774 Make: Taylorcraft
Model: BC12-D Serial #: 9074
ACTT: 684.3
1. Complied with Taylorcraft Service Bulletin 2007-002. Inspected fittings with struts, attach bolts, and steps removed. Cut edges of fabric to gain unobstructed access to left and right strut attach fittings. Inspected fittings visually and with a 1/4” flexible lighted borescope with 90˚ mirror in accordance with Section 1 of the Service Bulletin. No blistered paint noted on either fitting. Stripped both fittings and adjacent tubing to bare metal. Inspected and found no corrosion, cracks or pitting showing previous corrosion on either fitting. Treated both fittings and adjacent tubing with 2 part green epoxy primer and 2 coats of Tennessee red 2 part enamel paint. After primer and paint dried, verified drain holes were open an unobstructed. No fabric patch was necessary around either strut fitting. No further action required.Last edited by PT13Pilot; 01-24-2008, 16:28.

Wing Strut attach fitting A-A11 Inspection results
The Revision for the Attach fitting inspection SB 2007-002 issued Nov 8th, 2007 will have a new importance shortly.
I am asking all members who have complied with the inspection per the SB posted on Taylorcraft web site:
to please post any results and comments here, use your Model #, N-Number, and ser# of your Taylorcraft. Please include any usage on land, floats and or skis , hours and times if possible. Please use BRIEF comments.
The first reply will be mine and will use proper format. This will soon have furthur action by the NTSB & the FAA they have to insure for safety purpose that it will be a mandatory inspection ( known as a AD) do not shoot the messenger, there will be a commenting period and this data may help the outcome of the pending AD especially the usage.Tags: None
