    Re: Control Wheels

They were "dipped" into a plastic substance. Powder coating does about the same feel.

Exactly what I had in mind, powder coating. I like the feel and the looks. Larry

Duke tells me it was a "rubberized" dip, I am looking for specs off a drawing, I did two round wheels with powder coat and sold them at the fly-in, kind of wish I had them back!

In the course of our business we use plastic coatings a bit. Not surprisingly, it's done by a company called Plastic Coatings Ltd.

I'm sure there would be a similar company in the US.

            Larry ,
I tried to send a picture from -My Pictures but for some reason when I try it says ---not a valid file? Anyway there is one on my web-site. I had the spokes and shafts plated at Centex Plating-San Antonio, Texas and painted the wheels with Aerothane.http://www.buellpowellrestoration.com

They were rubber coated. I forgot. If yours are not cracked, then your doing good.

Nice, I went to your site and looked at them earlier. They are identical to what I have, except yours are beautiful, mine are rusty. Thanks you all the come back here on this.

                      Larry,
It's pretty easy to restore those banjo wheels because they come apart so easy. You can take the spokes and shaft out and get them plated. Polish the aluminum hub and do whatever with the wheel.

                        Re: Control Wheels

I was prepared to let this thread die but I now have another point. I have one wheel completely apart. Inside the hub I find a very pretty wine red paint, I think it has to be original as the spokes are painted in place, no other colors in there. However the outside of the hub is painted black as well as the tube around the circumference. I can find no evidence of red on the outer tube. I bring this up only to give you (the tribe) something to think about. I plan (will) end up with a color scheme similar to Duane Cole's. Red and cream, however I have not decided on a cockpit color scheme yet.

I found a color like that in my 41 back in the corners and nooks. Turned out to be the original "Metallic Maroon" used on the 41 "Deluxe". Mine is now Taylorcraft Ivory over Metallic Maroon. As far as I'm concerned, the prettiest combination ever used!
