  • mag timing circuit

Having retired recently I am going thru my tons of toys/tools/junk trying to sort into sell, throw away, keep, ect.
I have a bunch of these little circuit boards with an electronic oscillator chip and a speaker and battery connector (std 9V) on them. I have used some for all kinds of applications requiring a oscillating AC signal/tone.
One thing I did was to use it as a device to tell when the mags points opened and closed when checking timing of the engine ignition on the airplane.
I got a batch of them REALLY cheap and was just figuring if I would be willing to send them to anyone that wanted one because of the time and effort required for packaging and shipping.
What it does is tells you the difference between points closed and open because it changes tone when across the coil verses across the closed points.
The fancy device for doing this is not all that expensive, but I'll put this in prospective by telling you I only paid $1.00 each for these, but I hate to throw them away.
Mind, you would have solder on two wires and a connector or some clips yourself (I don't want to start a business by doing that myself) but I am putting this out to see if anyone is interested in these things.
Well, enough, anyone think they could use such a thing, let me know. We could use 3rd class shipping and such to minimize cost ect.

Way above my head, Darryl...I hope you find a good home for them.

Darryl I would be interested in a couple. If you need to get rid of the whole bunch I guess we can talk but I really only want 2 to 4. Larry

No, I was thinking one each by some simple packing means like a small bubble pack. I will have to count, I think I have a total of about 20 or so.
If I get enough interest I will package up a bunch at one time and send them out. I need to make sure the shipping cost is not too high and hope that everyone will send me a little something to cover the cost and my time. Guess if there is only a need for a few, that would work out also. We'll see.

Just checked one, they are on a pc board 2 inches by 3-1/2 inches. One 2 inch speaker, one pot to adjust the tone, a 555 chip, 1 capacitor, some resistors, and the battery connector. I'll try to post a pic.
I'll see if I can draw up a little circuit diag and of course show where to attach wires, no problem.

That is what I was thinking about. I will work with you, just tell me what you need to make it happen and I will send you the money. I have already saved way more then the $15 a year it costs to see this site go! I have received a box of nose rib sections to replace my corroded ones, 2 springs for my glove box doors, info that would have cost several thousands at an approved school! LOL
Do not think I am biased here, I am just a casual observer. Ya sure! Over and out; Larry

                Re: mag timing circuit

Ok, good, I'll have to look around for the right type of bubble pack and do the other stuff. I think I might have the schematic where I drew it up before. Anyway I will just take my time and work it in. I'll write all the names down just in case.

                    Re: mag timing circuit

Post office says $1.50 per bubble pack with one board in it. Two boards came to a little under $2.00. Third class, so will take a while after I ship. Need to make a drawing or picture and and some schematic copies.

                            Re: mag timing circuit

Here is a photo of how the leads that go to the magneto ground/case and the P-lead are connected. It interrupts the Vcc, that is, the +9v power to the chip.

And here is the schematic diagram.

If you have asked me for one here, or want one (or 2) please PM or email me an address. It will save me having to contact each of you individually. I'm going to package some tommorrow. If I have the addresses I should be able to send them out this week. The guys I don't hear from I will PM for an address.
