  • Exhaust removal and installation

I am annualing my BC12D. Everything is OK except the exhaust. My exhaust is a Wag-Aero one piece unit. The welding on the cones that the muffs fit into have started to come loose from the main exhaust. The exhaust itself appears to be OK. My IA and I removed the exhaust yesterday and it was a lot bigger job than we thought it would be. I will be sending the exhaust to Wag-Areo for repair. Does anyone out there have a good procedure as to how to install the exhaust once we get it back.

    Thanks,

    Frank

Leave the engine mount bolted to the engine but remove the engine and mount as "one piece" then install the exhaust and then the engine and mount...fun,fun,fun.

I kinda like the remove with hacksaw and replace with C-150 stuff, I enjoy the heat. Good luck Tim

First, you get you a couple of sticks of dynamite...

All jokes aside, this is the least fun part of owning a Taylorcraft. Splitting the stock exhaust into two pieces, the C-150 system, the Aeronca or Luscombe 2 piece exhausts... all of them start looking pretty attractive about now.

            Re: Exhaust removal and installation

Is it "legal" to use other exhausts? Will they fit inside the cowl (just annualed a 7AC, can't picture its exhaust in a TCraft cowl).

Frank, you do not actually have to remove the engine. Just move the engine and mount away from the firewall enough to slide it by. With two friends, they can hold up the engine on either side, then bolt it right back on.

Luscombe stacks have been used with good sucess. The left one exits the same location as the stock crossover. You will have to cut a hole for the left side though.

You can get a field approval and there are lots of 337's out there from people that have performed the mods. The biggest thing is you need to install blisters on the cowling for some version to clear the mufflers. Good luck Tim

                  Re: Exhaust removal and installation

There's also Sonny Poarch's Stainless exhaust which comes in two pieces and is very easy to install and remove.

It's not STC'd or PMA'd, but it is a fine system and much, much easier to deal with than the stock unit.....which IMHO is a horrible design.

                    Re: Exhaust removal and installation

I have a set of RYAN mufflers on my airplane, most likley nobody even knows what they are.I have 2 extra holes in the cowl that the stacks come out of.Cabin heat is from one side, carb heat if from the other.Sounds cool too.
as far as I know,Taylorcraft is the only airplane they were approved on,but I might be wrong on that.

I had an IA tell me my "home made" exhaust wasn't legal. Turned out the only exhaust he had ever seen on a Taylorcraft was from a Cub and IT was illegal! I had to show him the pictures from Chet's book and the parts catalogue to prove mine was the original one.
The "illegal" ones were sure easier to work with!
                      Hank
(Illegal only because none of them had any paper behind them. Not smart to just put a different exhaust on your plane and not document it.)

                        Re: Exhaust removal and installation

I have the Aeronca exhaust with Hanlon Wilson mufflers. Carb heat and cabin heat are reasonable. I've changed one side and it was not too bad.

I have two holes for the exhaust pipes and the one hole from the original is still there. It is the perfect size for my 4" flex hose from my engine preheater (basically a Palonis ceramic heater) The heat goes up the rear side of the engine, and with a blanket over the top of the cowl, the warm air exits the front of the cowling. Works pretty good but takes almost an hour to preheat.

Not one person has ever asked what that huge 4" hole is under the rear of the cowl.

Jack, would you mind sending me a copy of your Aeronca exhaust 337? You are the first person that I have found that has installed that type of system. Most do the C-150 stuff. Thanks Tim

                            Re: Exhaust removal and installation

I put in an unofficial 2 piece Aeronca system in my 1946 Taylorcraft. It was ugly, required two new holes in a 60 year old cowl, and home made fairings to be put over the exhaust pipe exits. It also sounded different.

But when it was time to take it off or put it back on...What a joy! The carb heat worked a little better if I recall.

The most interesting thing I've seen is four individual pipes all exiting the lower cowl side by side. The owner reported that it made a noticeable difference in power, but was a lot noisier.

What he said, only I will use Luscombe dual exhausts. In the interim, I just took a tubing cutter, and split the crossover pipe in the center of where the carb heat muff is, and welded a slip fitting on one side of it. It is covered by the muff, and even if it DOES leak, (mine doesn't), the exhaust is only going to the carb. Brie
