  • Info sharing and questions frm new guy

Being a new member I have a few questions and some ideas. I am doing an on going clean up/ extensive annual on N95334. She was born on Aug 30,1946 as a BC-12D.
Idea: The nose grills are so soft and too easy to bend in just touching them, so what I did after spending all evening bending them back to correct shape and making them look evenlwas to sand blast them (walnut shells) and then filled the back side cavity with T-88 epoxy. I embeded small wood sticks (like long tooth picks) in the epoxy. Now after painting them they are stiff and a lot more resistant to bending.
Questions: Where do you obtain the rubber gasket/donut seal the goes around the fuselage tank filler neck?
Does the cover that goes over the inst panel have to be screwed down to the boot cowl up under the windshield. In other words I know it is screwed along the top of the inst panel but when I when I wanted to replace some inst I had to remove the windshield to remove screws along the edge of the windshield frame that were impossible to get to unless the windshield was out.

    Dennis:

Clever repair on the nose grills!

Wag Aero has a tank donut that fits Taylorcraft. It's called the "Filler Neck Gasket, Piper Style, $3.49"

You can also make a tank neck seal by cutting a donut shape from a thick tire tube like a tractor tire tube. Cut it so it fits tight around the neck.

I have never had to remove all that stuff to change an instrument. Loosening the panel and tipping forward seems to always have been just enough. Maybe when you put it back use short screws and put the heads on the inside so it's easier next time???

The WAG grommet does not do well with auto fuel, Try a GF22 by metro molded products. They are made from rubber and you can trim the inner supports on the bottom to give you more clearance for your fuel cap. Good luck Tim

Last week at Sun-N-Fun someone said John Deer tractor people had the some that are close to the original.

I tried the John Deer approach, if you dont have a part number, they cannot help you. You might try an antique tractor place, but the GF22 has been flying on mine for about 6 years now. Tim

You can also use the bottom tank seal that goes in a toilet from your local hardware store. You will have to trim it a little.

New grills used to be pretty cheap from univair. I have not found the correct taylorcraft gasket anywhere, but have used the Ercoupe gasket in the past with some sucess. Yes the glareshield was originally screwed at the front, but I only attach at the instrument panel. Cover it in naughahyde to keep it from ratttling.

                  Dennis,

My top piece of aluminum shield was clearly made by an amateur, probably when the airplane was recovered in 1989, but it is only attached at the top of the instrument panel and it is relatively convenient to pull it out to work on the instruments, etc. It came with a commercially available black shag rug type covering that was laying on top but this was degrading from sunlight and I just left it out. I cannot detect whether there is any vibration noise or not. It does seem to wedge tightly at the front between the windshield and those two vertical tubes.

By the way, I love that paint scheme on your BC12D. Don't know why...

Thank you guys!! This site is great!! I will try an post photos of my progress of the so called extensive annual. So far the the nose, including engine has been cleaned, painted and replace baffles, highly polished prop etc. The outer part (bowl, top&bottom cowl and boot cowl) and landing gear are Stits Eagle red. All new glass, new interior. The doors are next for red paint but where to stop ?? Kinda want to paint it like Duane Coles's but with some black trim. I am tired of working on her or him since January. Can't decide on a name either "Dennis the Menace", "Lil Rebel", Firebaby (if I decide on flames with blue highlites) or "Miss Triss". Thanks again you have been a big help.
