Tribe: The parking brake on my BC-65 doesn't lock. I had been locking it with a plastic clamp when starting. The AP that looked at it said I needed a new cable. Any help in fixing or finding the right cable? Thanks..

    Dan:
I got one from Spruce that's called "T-Handle Dash Control"...5 Ft. Single Wire, $19.50. It seems to be the same as the original except the handle is a little smaller.

(As a side comment, conventional wisdom says don't depend on your parking brake when starting--there are threads on hand propping and parking brakes you might want to read. Most folks don't even use their parking brakes, even when parking!)

Thanks -- I don't rely on it but consider it one extra piece of insurance.

              Re: Parking Brake

This looks like a nice place to post parking brake question. I only need the parking brake occasionally to keep the airplane from rolling down the beach or sloping terrain while getting (crawling) out of my L-2B, not for starting, so it does'nt need to hold very much just long enough to chock it. The parking brake parts all seem to be there and it looks like it holds by friction over an eccentric (sp) cam affair. Any help out there?

PS With wheels and brakes installed of course

Bob,just push on the brakes and pull on the handle.Should hold. If it doesn't then adjust the cable. If you look in the gallery on page 3 there is a group of pictures called 'riestorations Richs. The pictures are of my restorations. One of the pictures show a ship with the engine running, The parking brake was holding it there. Dick

Where is this T handle located? In my old fairly origonal bird I have a T handle located under the panal at the extreme left. Wondered what it was for. As this bird is still full of coon hsit in a dark hanger I have not traced it down yet. Working on getting the wings off.

PS if that is T handle is origonal I will take a pic and post it here you.
LOL I did not relealize how fortunate I was, there is a National Aircraft Parts Association store just down the street.

I got one and it sits in just the perfect spot to dig into my leg right under my kneecap. On long Xcntries it gets a bit painful. I ended up cutting a piece of foam insulation that is used to insulate pipe to add some padding.

I use my parking brake some of the time, I back it up with chocks that have a long rope attached ...it is located on the lower left side od the panel..If I pull it out all the way it will snap loose, if I pull it out about half way it works great and I cannot move the plane. The 62 year old teeth are probably worn, I do not know the purpose of the spring, some day I will take it apart. See the attached photo

                        Hey Dick,
How do I get to see those pictures on page three of the gallery?
All I could find in the gallery was page 1 and no clue of how to proceed from there.

SCroll down and click on the old man standing in front of an aircraft (Forrests Dad), scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see more pages. Select page three. On the top right you will find an albumn labeled L2 Restorations Richs. The top row center picture shows the ship running. As an aside the left picture shows an L-2M wing it shows the spoilers. Dick

I use my parking brake often. When I prop it and my wife is at the controls I set the parking brake without her knowing it and tell her to push on the brakes as hard as she can. It's not that I dont trust her but I figure its like haveing double insurance. I also set it and make sure the plane wont move and then chauk the wheels when I prop it. It works nice too if you are alone and have the plane running and forgot to close the hanger doors.

Photo attached of my parking brake T-handle. It wasn't holding when I bought my plane -- the locking threads inside the handle mechanism were worn down and the handle wasn't "catching" when pulled out, so just replaced the whole thing, cable included, with a new stock item from Aircraft Spruce or Wag-Aero, I forget which. Holds the brakes pretty well at idle. I only use the parking brake for starting (with chocks and the tail tied as well), and for run-up (to save my thigh muscles from holding the brakes).
