  • How much is it worth?

Hi all, I am looking for opinions about what a `46 bc12d like this is worth.

Any clues or opinions would be appreciated.

Cont. A65, 24 gal. gas, 229 SMOH, two wing tanks, auto gas STC, sound proof kit, shoulder harnesses, dual brakes, skylights, large rear windows, F21 headliner, ELT, stainless exhaust. Panel has altimeter, 8 day clock, rate of climb, tach, oil temp., oil pressure, turn & bank, airspeed, compass, inclinometer. Has metal prop, external antenna. Looks clean.

Has the F21 type welded strut fitting on front spars.

In 1998 it had new ceconite, spars, prop, all glass.

Since `98 had new seat sling, oil temp gauge, tachometer, tires and tubes, cowl pad. All logs present.

    Compression test ;
    #1-75/80
    #2-75/80
    #3-78/80
    #4-77/80

    Thanks, Dave.

I have a BC12D 1945 with 1200 TT and 100 on the engine, new Slick Mags and a A-200 flip lop radio, ten years on the Cecionite, I have 18 invested but would not sell it for less than 20.. it has every thing else that you mentioned. A great light sport plane, the problem is there are not many quaified taildragger pilots. The sport plane program has a lot of emphahsis on new planes and not enough talk about the 3500 T-crafts. cubs and c-120s. The EAA needs to pay some attention to the older planes.

If sheetmetal is straight and no patches on struts, should be low 20's, but realistically high 10's.

            Dave,

It sounds like you have found a really nice airplane! Assuming all ADs are complied with and a prebuy inspection finds no problems, it should bring top dollar. But I have noticed top dollar is different in various parts of the country. In California you would have a 25-27K airplane. Where I live, in SW Washington it would be $1500 to 2K less. I have seen similar asking prices near the east coast. Down the middle of the country, from the midwest down to the Gulf Coast, prices seem to be a little less, low twenties in general.

But another factor is how much do you like this particular airplane, and how sick of searching for one are you. If you have a plane that you like, close by, that you don't have to travel a long distance to view, that is worth quite a bit in time and money. I went on a couple of wild goose chases before I got tired of the lies and games, and bought a local plane that had yet to be assembled.

A good airplane, at a reasonable price, that passes prebuy, isn't going to stay on the market long. If the early bird gets the worm, the airplane buyer with cash and motivation, gets the good deal. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Uhhh, we have a lot of dumb blondes here in California, but I'm not sure they would be willing to fork over $25K for a 65 horse Taylorcraft.

85 horse and real clean... sure.

                  Bill,

Several years back a guy called me from out of nowhere. I think he ran into one of the guys I work with who lives near Flabob (sp). He wanted my opinion on buying a BC12D with an A-65. I forget the exact engine time, but it was somewhere around midtime. The fabric was 17 years old. I advised him against buying it because of the price. He bought it anyway, paid $27K.

There was/is a highly modified Taylorcraft at Fla-Bob, with 100HP and a lot of really interesting "upgrades". The guy's name is Travis, he's one of the good old boys that's been at Fla-Bob for a hundred years.

Clearly an experimental, or what would become an experimental instantly upon a visit from any local bureaucrats.

This plane would probably be worth 27K if you wanted that type of hotrod T-craft. I don't think the guy wanted to sell it, although it has been a few years since I have seen him.

It would have to be a REALLY perfect museum restoration Taylorcraft, in my humble opinion, to fetch that kind of money. But yes, an Oshkosh champion would certainly be worth that if someone wanted to spend the money to have a museum piece.

I talked to a fellow from Atlanta who said a buddy bought a T-craft from out there in Fla-bob. Didn't realise until later that the wings were to short, and done without approval. Now they are trying to figure out how to get things straightened out. Tom
