Does anyone know the original mag switch in a 46 BC-12D SN.8315 (I think) or have a photo of one?

Somewhere on the internet, there is a drawing of it. I have found it once. I will try to find and send you the link. Not details, just a basic outline drawing. It is a Briggs & Stratton part. Not sure how plentiful they are.

They are very un-plentiful. I persuaded Eric M to send me his one...he's regretted it since. It's sitting in my newly-restored 1946 BC12D, and it works a treat. I can do a photo this weekend. Sorry, Eric, you can't have it back.

The outline drawing / sketch is I think on Ron Greene's CD set for the L2. I think it's a A-700 mag switch.

            Re: Mag Switch

Thanks everyone for the info. There's one for sale on Ebay that is claimed to be from a D model Tcraft and while it looks like an old style mag switch, it doesn't look like these. Thanks again.

Rob- I thought I just loaned it to you ;-) Glad to hear it is working out good. I may be over your way with work in the not so distant future. I'll have to look you up.

That is ok- I traded my buddy Dick Smith an intake fairing for one for my clipwing. The one he sent me was really nice.

I see several on e-bay- they do bring ALOT of money ($200-$250) but the panel doesn't look right without them.

I thought there was an AD to remove those switches. Somthing to do with the contacts inside the switch? Dont remember exactly?

                  Re: Mag Switch

There is not an AD on those mag switches. They work very well and you can repair them. Mechanics don't repair or fix anything now they remove and replace. That's why so many Taylorcrafts and others don't have them any more.

                    Re: Mag Switch

The old mag switches also make a great mount to use a modern mag switch. With an afternoons work you can take the switch apart, and rivet in a plate to mount the new switch. File down the nut that holds the switch in, so the old handle will fit over it. Trim the flange from around the handle, cut and fit a key then silver solder it into the handle. Paint everything up. Now you have a modern switch that looks like an original. Tom

                      Re: Mag Switch

I have a bunch of A-9 switches which are simliar to the Briggs switch and the A-7 with the exception of a battery postion on them. There are 3 styles, one exactly like the briggs switch, one with a smaller handle and a stamped face like the briggs, and one with a cast face. All these switchesare like new on the inside and on the back with strong detents (not wore out), with faces needing some restoration. I don't have any left that are identical to the original switched left, but I have the other two styles. I having being selling a few on ebay and average $50-$100 ea. I will put an ad in the classifeds for these switches for those that might be interested.

                        Re: Mag Switch

Sorry if I gave any missinformation, but it looks very simular to a switch that was on my Champ.
I was moving my champ out of the hanger to fly, touched the prop ,and the prop kicked back. I checked and my mags were in the off position. I traced it to the switch and was told by others at my feild that it was a common problem with that model of switch. I was told or assumed( it was so long ago I dont remember ) that there was an AD or service bulletin on it.
I removed it and put in a key switch.

                          Re: Mag Switch

After years of use they develop a track across the contacts and cause the mags to stay hot. You can just take it apart and clean the metal track off.

There is a very good write-up in the March 2004 Taylorcraft owner's club newsletter that gives in detail how to take an A7 mag switch apart, test, clean, and reassemble it with illustrations. If anyone wants a copy I would be glad to send them one. I will be leaving Friday 18'th and be back the 25'th so anyone needs one in that time I will send it when I get back.

I tried this yesterday and it seems to have gotten lost in the mist. So will try again. I have the same mag as pictured earlier in this thread but it is in need of a rebuild. I tried to find the news letter by serching, but no luck. Can I get a copy form someone?
                              Thanks, Larry
