    Re: Glove box

Hey guys, the mold already exists and has been used to make several handles. It works great and makes nice handles. The only problem is they are weak because of the resin used. We have been talking about laying some glass fibers into the resin to make them a little stronger. I need to pass the mold over but haven't mailed it yet (I TOLD you I was slow! I got tied up taking a Masters level 35 hour class on spacecraft structural design for my job and had to finish it in 3 days! First rule for drinking from a fire hose, NEVER close your lips over the nozzle!). I PROMISE to pack up the mold this weekend and hope to get it mailed by Monday. Sorry for all the delays guys.

        Re: Glove box

For what it is worth, I made a pair of handles for my glove box doors out of wood. When painted and installed you can't tell and they work just fine.

          Re: Glove box

          That's a great idea, Richard.

I'm thinking a wood part would weigh less than a glass reinforced plastic part and be just as servicable. And the time required to make one or two handles outa wood has to be about equivalent to the time to mold them in plastic. Besides, the low tech approach just seems more appropriate to a 60 year old airplane!

What wood did you use? Oak? Seems like spruce might be a little soft for a handle.

I guess you probably used...what? A bandsaw and router?

I don't have a sample handle to work from, so I'm guessing at the size from photographs. Could you post a couple dimensions...or maybe a photo of the handle with a ruler next to it?

I think that maple would be better than either material mentioned. It is harder than spruce and won't splinter like oak. Dick

                Re: Glove box

I believe the wood I used was just plain old white pine. I didn't have any old handles to use for measurements, so I just eyeballed it from pictures I had seen.

I don't have a bandsaw, so I used a jigsaw. I rounded the corners off with a belt sander and then hand sanded to tweak them. It is not an exact replica, but unless you are looking really close you don't notice.

I will not be able to post a picture with measurements until next week.

Now all I need is a pair of yoke hub covers.

Pine? a jigsaw? and a belt sander? You're a talented woodworker, Richard.

I'll bet you could make those yoke centers with a pocket knife and an old fence post!

                      Re: Glove box

I have contacted Carl on the handles and Richard on the pretzel balls. I still have Richards mailing address but can't find Carls (if I had his I have lost it). The molds and masters are sitting in front of me right now and as soon as I get Carls mailing address I will drop the handle stuff in the mail. Richard, are you still interested in trying to make the control wheel balls?

Just sent it with all contact info. I usually check the home mail box a couple of times a day. Work box is always open but am usually too busy to answer non-work messages very quickly.

Sorry it took me so long but I finally got some pics of my glove box and glove box door handle that we made from curly birds eye maple. The glove box is made just long enough to fit inside the boot cowl and will hold a sectional. We also made it so it is removable, incase you need to get in behind it for some reason you just remove 8 screws and slide it out...you don't even have to remove the glare shield. Check out the pics and tell me what ya think.
