Had to go out of town suddenly last week (death in the family) and just got back tonight. I have some of the aluminum sheared up already and the drawings showing the correct degree of bend from top to bottom BUT, having a template (from an original install) would be INFANITLY better! If nothing else the old one could be fit up to a couple of planes to see how much variation there was. I worked on Navy planes for almost 30 years and even A-6's and F-14’s were NOT made to the drawings! All of them were fudged and fitted as needed for the particular plane. The only plane I know of that is TRUELY fully interchangeable is the B-2 and the prototype that was upgraded to a production configuration is NOT the same as the others. Want a plane that DEFINES not being "carbon copies" of each other? I work with the Space Shuttle now. Each of them is really a prototype!
Still need to dig out the drawings and copy them. I'll try to get them in the mail this week.
Hank
Hank,
NPR had a program today on the space shuttle, the premise being that each one was a "homebuilt" with everything from the insulation blankets to the heat tiles being hand-made and hand assembled. They interviewed the ladies (and one man) in the shop that sews the insulation blankets. What came through was the pride and sense of responsibility that each of them had in their handi-work. Now, back to the thread. How 'bout those three piece windshields!?
Alan
A friend of mine is just finishing up his model B. It is suposed to have a three peice windhield. The big quesion is how the bottom of the windhield was attached to the boot cowl and how the veticle strips were attached if at all. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. He has the rubber seal but we are at a los on how it was attached.
Guys,
My royal PITA project at work closes TODAY!!!
Last week I was assigned to work on the CEV landing systems so I am actually doing work I LIKE again!
On top of that I actually got out to the airport TWICE this week and I am really hoping this is a sample of what is to come and I can get my 41 flying again. I even have leads on a couple of A&P/IAs who can make the windshield up and fit it to my plane (if I can get some sample transparencies). I have the metal parts drawings for the 4 piece but nothing on a 3 piece and no plane to do the fit up on anyway. We need two leads on this, one for the 3 piece and I will do the 4, but to work, I think we will need some used parts to see how far apart the planes are from each other. If we make up a set of metal pieces and some stiff cardboard templates for the "glass" we should be able to fit them to several planes and see if they were custom to each plane or if there was some commonality.
As I see it the first thing we need to do is figure out who needs which ones. I have only seen the B series with 4 piece and have never actually touched a 3 piece so I'm not much help there. The 4 piece has a Windshield piece in front with a windscreen on either side and an eyebrow between the wings above the windshield. I am "assuming" the 3 piece just uses one piece of "glass" that curves up and over the top instead of two like the 4 piece. Sound right?
How about everyone making sure which they need and who has what on the list and let's pool our efforts and assets.
I have copies of the 4 piece drawings for the metal parts but need patterns for the transparencies.
Hank
The A models used the 3 piece windshield, they were done a little different between the wings.
The B model windshield is tied down with the 2 strips that go down to the base of the windshield. It is also finished off and tied down at the front door post with a piece of metal that is folded over and joggled, and tied to the tube with an adel looking clamp.
I think dad has my heavy cardboard glass patterns back now. As with any windshield they will have to be trimmed to fit each individual airplane.
Tom
Tom,
Do we want to split this into two threads? Since it looks like the A model really is 3 part and the D's are 4 I don't know how much they have in common. If each of us does one when we have something that fits each of ours we can send a set of paper templates to each other to see if any parts match. Then we can draw up all the parts and make sets of drawings available.
Do you want to coordinate the A's?
In the interim, if you are going to need drawings or have old parts for the D's with the 4 piece windshield send me an email at hjarrett 2 @ cox . net (leave out the spaces). I don't know if that works but if a bot is looking it should miss it and if someone is this deep in our group and figures it out (not hard) I probably want to hear from them anyway.
Hank
I "think" I mean the BX-12..... but both of my planes are the standard side by side, two place planes with a 65 HP engine up front. All you guys with your fancy designations just confuse me. (;f
I never counted the windows on a tandem. FIVE piece?!?!?!? Windshields are usually up front and windscreens are along the side of the front. What are the 5 pieces? Got to look closer at our cousins.
Hank
Just looked at Peek's book. darned if I ever noticed the other two just ahead of the "A" post!
I put one of the original model D windshield on the wall at Forrests so that people could see it. I make all the pieces to replicate the appearance using a new blown 1/8 thick windshield. The original units were .080 thick. Dick
Thank you Dick , I did a photo too!!! WE got into this a while back ' The Model "B" is side by side the Model "D" is tandem. The first A's had a LOT of pieces
How is the rummer channel that sits on the boot cowl attached if at all to the boot cowl. Also were the verticle strips attached to the tubes in any way?
Thanks.
P.S. Forest How is my Foundation card coming? I sent in a Pay Pay payment for 2007 last month. I guess my check I sent in November of 2006 was never received?
Robert, the Auster is not even close, no offense intended. By all means, Tribe, if your plane had a 4-piece originally, go back to it. It is easy and much lighter. Use 1/16 plexi. I did on my BL. See pages 78 and 119 of the book. I'll look over my old factory photos, which are larger in most cases, and if they offer more detail I'll try to put them on the net.
