  • Need help! Two part question!

    A friend of mine A Really GOOD gent with tons of covering experience (NO Taylorcraft however) has offered to cover my fuselage as he is between projects.!!! I put to together the tail today to determine exit points for the rudder cables(done)

    Part one question: also realized I need to know exactly where/how the inspection holes /plate is placed for the elevator hook up and trim hook up .

    Part two question: I appear to have all the trim parts in the elevator(pictures attached please excuse as these control parts are next on the clean up before paint and covering) I am however missing the trim cable and need the size of it and how it runs from the front pully to the rear pully. Is it a loop? If so how does it attach as a loop? I have heard something about a spring...if so what size and where does it attach.

    Want to get this rigging done so I can explain to the gent what goes where for the inspection holes and more importantly now how for me to rig up the trim. Click image for larger version

    The cable is 1/16"diameter.

    The ferrules are in the guides that the cable passes through, typically a brass insert to prevent wear on the cable.

      Thank you. Learning all the while!! The manual I have shows me nothing. I hope Scott can show some additional pictures of the spring and how it mounts as well as the entire loop I might be able to figure out which ferrule is which based on their orientation to the right or left (I am not currently in front of it however do remember one higher and one lower.

        Well guys Hank had a drawing that Kevin Mays did in 1999. It is very clear what goes where. Scott if you have a shot of how close the tie down channel for the wire is to the ferrule

          The cable clamps should hit the ferrels at the full up and full down positions. This is how the travel limits for the tab are set.

              I suspect someone parting out and airframe would be you best source. Otherwise they are relatively easy to fabricate.
              here are some pics. I really don't have good shots of the cable routing but it's not difficult to figure out once you get started.

                  Jim, something important to check. In the photos of your LH elevator it looks like the lube hole for the trim tab jack screw is clogged and or painted shut. It should be open on the top of the elevator tube where the brass jackscrew resides just outboard of the pully wheel.

                  Keep it open and don't let the fabric block it when you recover the elevator. You can see where is should be in Scott's first photo but it's a bit fuzzy, it lines up with that middle weld.

                    Thanks. All this is getting stripped as we speak. I had to assemble the empenage for rigging before the fuslage left fo covering. I will pay attention to this. Jambed jack screw would not be good thanks again!

                      I take it this is it? If a hole is left in the fabric one would think water would intrude. How is that gotten around? Click image for larger version

                        Water won't displace the lub if it's serviced regularily.
                        But you can alway put a small piece of tape over the hole.

                          Well on to strip every thing then epoxy prime. I am thinking perhaps a little plastic plug could be wedged in.. Ah an issue for much later..perhaps just keeping oiled up is the answer as you say.

                            I wouldn't plug it with anything. Exposure isn't a big issue in the grand scheme of things. It's kind of protected anyway, so close to the vertical.

                            If its lubed with LPS 2 or equivalent a rain storm isn't going to get in the hole much. Even flying in the rain, little if anything is going to get in there. You can also lube with Corrosion X which will hold up better to rain.

                            Tape is fine if you are out on the ramp from traveling. I wouldn't ever worry about it.

                              Yes as Scott said as well. Lube will keep out the water. Trim tab stripped disassembled the elevator with the trim jack screw and stripping to bare metal. The zinc chromate paint had failed. Rusting underneath in some spots.
