  • BC-65 Landing Gear

    Hi Folks,
I'm restoring a 1940 BC-65. Does anyone have an airworthy set of landing gear for sale that will fit my airplane? Both sides of mine have corrosion and might be repairable but I thought I'd check for replacements first. Thanks,
    John Loftus

how soon do you need it? I have a pair of nice gear but want to make a fixture off them first.

      Ragwing nut,
My goal is to fly the airplane in about six months. I'd like to get the landing gear issue resolved in the next several weeks. Does that fit your schedule? Do you have a price in mind? Thanks

New from univair they are almost $2k each so that would be the standard you would compare to.

Unless someone can afford to obtain another STC only UNIVAIR and experimental landing gear from Alaska will be available as new I believe. Repair is still an option. There are at least three points of access for moisture. One where the upper A frame and diagonal tubing meet at a common weld point near the bungees. One hole per Service Bulletin through the lower diagonal strut. And one at a common hole at the lower gear leg-brake flange-axle assembly facing outward through the flange under the brake backing plate. They are not sealed from what I've seen and periodic inspection is warranted. Inspect and internally coat with an anti-corrosion product. Inspect and externally coat with a quality primer and topcoat.

Mike, Keep us up on your fixture project! It was a real shame when we lost out on the BC12-D strut fixtures. Our planes and members need to be sure that never happens again to another critical part. We can always find a way to make a gear "repaired". Kind of like Washington's Cherry Tree Hatchet. All original. Just had the handle replaced 4 or 5 times and the head twice.

My main interest is to build a tall gear for my clipwing project, but will make it useable to repair gear as well

Are we talking about fixtures for MAINS or just tail wheels? I thought the original post was for main gears. What kind of fixtures are needed for a tail wheel assy?

Hey thanks Tim for the correction and keeping us honest for terms. Someone should do a PMA. The guy near Anchorage makes very nice gear both standard and tall.

That makes a LOT more sense! Not exactly a real problem making a fixture for the tail springs! First off, why would anyone? Not like they are hard to find! ;-)

After you go through all the expense and hassle of a PMA, you will understand why Univair get $2k for one.

It's just a matter of time before 78 old gear will be the subject of an AD. It's not if but when unless we keep them airworthy by periodic inspection and repair.
