Question for other mechanics

I am getting ready to assemble a Continental A-65. I was looking a Continental SIL99-2C. It appears on pages 12 and 13 that the instructions for sealing the case halves calls for the mixing of 2 different sealants, plus a primer for the nose seal. I just wanted to confirm that is how others are reading it.

That is news to me, but its been awhile since I put a continental together. I dd recently build the IO0360 for my Cherokee and went through this on my Lycoming. I read it as you read it, but I have always in the past used permatex #3 and silk thread on the parting surfaces, and weatherstrip adhesive on the nose seal, never a problem for 30 years prior. The SIL gives you the Loctite numbers so you should be able to source those locally for alot less than buying from TCM.

I was looking at CMI Standard Practice MM dated 15 April 2016, page 3-11 and 3-12 show and states case half 2-4 apply P?N 654663 and case half 1-3 apply a thin translucent coat of p/n 646942 (gasket maker) not to exceed 0.010 inch thick, looks like Continental wants two different types, just thought that's for c75 thru O-200, but would probably work just fine for the A-65, and later it says to use Permatex on the OD of the nose seal or crankshaft seal, gary

TCM publication M-O standard practices letter includes A series engines as well.

I read it like you do and did a C90 like that in 2016 but I do not recall the primer but I see it there in the bulletin.

They list 654663 & 646942 & 654942. The first two are Loctite 1522029 and 515 respectively.

They do not give a Loctite # for the last 654942 however I recall it being Loctite 515.

I have 1522029 & 515 I used on a C90 two years ago they were new at the time and I will likely never use again. You can have for postage if you want. Dave R

Thanks Dave. I already have the1522029. I'll have to look, but I may have some 515 as well. I'll look for some of the primer. I was going to put the case halves together this weekend, but I think I will call Continental and confirm the process on Monday.

Tom I am pretty sure that the p/n 654942 is a typo. When you look at their chart they list Loctite 515 for nose seals and there is nothing in the chart for 654942. Dave R

I have seen silk thread and hylomar for the case halfs and pliobond for the nose seal. Tim

I use Hylomar for the parting surface with thread. A split seal in the A-65 I use contact cement for the case contact area. If it's a solid steel backed seal for the tapered shaft I use a little Hylomar on the case.
