Re: BC12D Head liner wire suports

NormG is right. Upholstery shops have the correct wire. It is spring steel and slightly rust resistant (spray it with any laquer after bending) and tougher than a bar maid to bend over. Easy way to bend it is to mark the bend with chalk then clamp a length of pipe in a vice, slide the wire into the pipe, slide another pipe over the rest of the pipe and pull the free end of the pipe a little past the angle of bend that you need. The wire will spring back a little. Don't over bend it because it is difficult to straighten it out. Don"t use heat on the wire. The reason for using the pipe is because if you don't you won't be able to make a tight angle at the bend. Don't try to cut the wire with wire cutters. Use a grinder or cutoff wheel. Use glasses!

have at it, it is easy

        Ron,
Using a pipe is a good way to go, I used a tubing bender. I also marked the bend points with tape, secured the rod in a vise using a groved piece of wood as a protector so not to mark up the rod. I also laid out the pattern on my work bench to use as a template. Just a simple masking tape outline will do,(see Robert Lees drawing).
The laquer is a good idea, I'll do that.

Just wanted to let everyone know where you can find 1/8-inch stainless steel wire for headliner supports.
The company is called Speedy Metals. They are located in several northern states and Texas.
            www.speedymetals.com or toll-free 866-938-6061.
You are looking for round stainless steel rod type 303. They cut it into any length. I ordered their 60-inch cuts @ $6.03 each. I thought I needed 5 but it turns out the airtex headliner only needs two.
            Have a good day!

              Hi Guys,

Instead of painting the finished article would it not be better to use some silicone RC aircraft fuel tube over the wire? Available at all good RC stores.

              Regards,
              Charles

If you are using the steel wires that is a good idea if you can get the tube and wire to feed through the sleeve sewn in the headlinner. Going to have to be patient to feed it through. The stainless or painted ones won't have that problem.
If I couldn't get stainless I would try it.

Has anyone checked the stainless for "springyness" to see if it holds good tension on the headlinner? (I could use the proper name for the material property, but I kind of like "springynes"

I did this the other day, but I don't know where it went.
I think the silicone fuel tubing would be hard to get on the wire, and hard to slide in the headliner. I think I would use heat shrink tubing. Easy to slide on, then shrink it up. It would also slide in the headliner just fine. If you get to the right place it can be bought off the roll by the foot. Tom

Heat shrink, why didn't I think of that. Its in my notebook now.

                      Thanks,
