  • Aileron cable

Here is a question for anyone who may know, are the aileron cables from the aileron hinge bracket to the center of the fuselage where they attach to the control cables above the seat the same length , both the front cable and back cable on the bracket ? Im building a left wing and have to have a new set made, Any help would be appreciated. I do not have one of them to measure.

For the B model the fore and aft aileron cables should be the same length.

"Should" being the operative word. I have three Taylorcrafts and I would bet a really good airport lunch you couldn't swap the aileron cables from one plane to the other. You want to put the last fittings on ON THE PLANE to make sure everything lines up. I made a set of the steel plates that connect the sides in the fuselage overhead of different lengths so I could swap the plates out to make up for fit problems. The turnbuckles could be mixed around with different plates to get everything rigged. Another thing to watch for is turnbuckles that won't fit through the guides on the fuselage! Some are too large to fit through the tubes, even with only the end fittings! When I recover I plan to weld in larger guide tubes so I can pull the wings without having to cut the end fittings off the aileron cables.

YES! I did remember to remove the wear guides from the tubes.

Thank you those are good answers , From what you say I can probably have adjustments made with the turn buckles, if there is a small difference in the two cables . Like I said I have one cable to make measurements from. Progress on the wing is moving forward slowly but steadily .

          Re: Aileron cable

I just put a fitting on one end and laced the cable top the crank at the aileron end, then pulled the cables tight with the aileron clamped aligned with the trailing edge and put the fittings on in the fuselage at the length needed. When I went to pull the wing back off was when I found out the turnbuckle wouldn't fit through the guide tubes. !(#(&!%#!

Had to cut off the turnbuckle fitting and use a longer steel tab to make up for the lost length. If the fuselage wasn't covered I would have just welded on a larger diameter fuselage cable guide and turned new anti chaff pieces to fit. I WILL be doing that on the 45 fuselage.

            Re: Aileron cable

You have around 1" of adjustment with the turnbuckle for each cable. You can also make new links in the middle to adjust the length if needed. The only thing that should make the length vary is the placement of the aileron bell crank. Even then both cables for the wing should be the same length. As Hank pointed out the cable length between planes might not be the same.

I just squeeze the turnbuckle ends just a wee bit..then seem to fit through!

                Re: Aileron cable

When I rebuilt my wings a few years ago all of my old aileron cables were the same length and I made all four new cables to the same length

And my turnbuckles just fit through the cable guides. I must be living right...
