Just ordered some 3m Fire putty. Any suggestions on what to replace the old sound dampener with once I get the leak sorted out and everything cleaned up? Or is it necessary/worthwhile in the first place?

Stick-on or glue-on material dampens the resonant drumming...science would say it changes the vibration frequency or something similar probably. I've used the black foam stuff to help reduce sound and add insulation to the cockpit. Make sure it's compatible with aircraft and any potential fire requirements.
