Re: So you want to live on an airport, do ya?
I live on an airport, at least I can see it from my house. But the locals are hostile to airplanes. There is one other pilot that just bought a house but he keeps his plane a 2 hour drive away, the closest you can rent a hangar, if you happen to come up on the list. There are properties on the airport, but no hangars are allowed, no student pilots, no touch and go's. From complaints I have heard many people would like to see it closed but due to fire and medical access issues I believe they can not shut it down. The county didn't want to maintain it, so they gave it to the utility district, which is worse. So it is what it is. The locals don't seem to mind day visitors, and the hotels would like the business. But it's not "living with you plane." I keep dreaming of a private farm strip somewhere up in Oregon.Last edited by SpecialT; 04-27-2018, 19:28.

I have 2 strips here on the farm & a 68'x84' hanger I cut all the lumber with a Mobile Dimension sawmill at a farm I had in the UP. Nothing like having a hanger & runways on a farm. I also am selling a runway lot near Gaylord in northern lower Michigan about 60 miles south as the bridge, 4Y4 is the airport & it's year round & plowed in a great resort with a golf course, restaurant, clubhouse with Olympic size pool, hot tuns, game room, X country skiing, horse back riding, lakes, boats, tennis, on the snowmobile & atv trails & it has it's own fire dept. Lot is aprox 100' x 1000' price is $29,900. One of the prettiest parts of Michigan. Dues are $250 & taxes are cheap https://flightaware.com/resources/ai.../map/satelliteLast edited by flylo; 04-29-2018, 09:45.Eric Richardson

I'd like to move to the SW so I can shoot long range so we'll sell the farm which has 8 bedrooms 5 baths, all the orig oak & cherry woodwork in great shape, 9' basement never a leak, not even a drain. Built in the 1880s. I love it & could get the Bonanza in & out with no problem but after breaking my back I just can't take the cold anymore. Full machine shop with hand picked great American machines like thhe Pacemaker lather from Checker Motors in Kalamazoo, 35 ton iron worker, 3 HP mill with under 50 hours since new. Wish I could move it all. I've waited for Al Bores global warming but it just ain't coming.Eric Richardson

Re: So you want to live on an airport, do ya?
Ouch, how did you hurt your back? Sorry to hear that. This last year one of my boys broke his leg (femur all the way thru), another took the ends of two fingers off of one hand, and fell out of a tree and opened up his head. Everybody healed and nothing is maimed so I feel good about that, but I have a lot more grey hair and I stress out every time I hear one of them scream.
Put everything on a semi truck. I have a friend who ships his bees from North Dakota to California every year and back.
$29k will not even get your utilities hooked up here, and you start paying at $0.17/kw and it goes up to $1.00/kw "progressively." Al Bores policies are in full effect here. Avgas is $6.58 an the local airport and you can't use lumber you cut with your own saw mill. They are saving it for the beetles and forest fires. You can't even cut it after it burns.

I live in Pecan Plantation, Tx., 0TX1. We have been rated as number 6 in the country for communities. We are a shared ammenities HOA. Other than the folks living outside the airpark thinking we're all rich, it is a great place to live. There is something for everyone here. Golf, tennis, fishing, marina, an archery and airgun range, swimming pools something called pickle ball, dog park and 2 airports with fuel farms. Ya'll come on down. We are not far from the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex.

I live on an airport, have for 20 years. It would be almost impossible to make me move to the city, but the city has been moving closer to us. Use to be a dark hole out here at night, now there is lights everywhere and houses everywhere. Little to no grumbling from the locals, but there is also not alot of traffic on our field.

Re: So you want to live on an airport, do ya?
When I broke my back I was 49 & in the best shape of my life, could bench 400# & Leg press 650#, could ride 100 miles on a bike most anyday. 3 or 4 years before the co-op electric service had moved the lines, dropped 300' on one side of the farm for the run way & 100' on the other side. We had a verbal that they could cut any trees except for a huge oak & a maple in front of the house that we think were there or planted when the house was built in the 1880s. I was lifting the 4' rounds to the splitter & felt it when it happened, may have slipped or stepped in a hole I don't know but knocked off & went in. Next day went to a chiroprac.tor friend I was Rotary with who did Xrays & said I had to go to a nerosugeon. I had no back problem, no narrowing of the disc but blew out 4 disc, 3 external & 1 internal. Had 6hrs surgery almost 3 hours of recovery. Took a year & had to learn to walk again, wore a bone growth stimulator 8 hrs a day for 6 months. I belived I could beat it so much I bought the Bonanza, but not to be. I can walk or stand 20-30 minutes total a day but I have a range here on the farm & target shoot all the good days so I'mstill a blessed man just time to turn the page. I tell all the young people 2 things, don't put off fun as I used to skydive, scuba, motocross & many more fun things. #2 get long term disability insuranceEric Richardson

Well that's lousy. I don't know what's more amazing. That you could bench 400 lbs. or that you hurt your back trying to pick up a 4' tree round. I remember working on a jobsite when I was young with an ex Navy seal, a small short guy and I called his bluff when he was claiming he could bench 250 lbs. But I was wrong, he could.

Re: So you want to live on an airport, do ya?
It sure changed my life & I had it made, a hnger & 2 strips at home, 2 T hangers & a 62'x96'x 20'H big hanger with a nice work shop at the airport 5 minutes from work. You don't how good you have it till it's gone. I was sure I could beat it if I worked hard enough but was wrong. So folks don't put off a flight, atime with the family or fun. I worked 60+ hrs a week & enjoyed working. I'm probably the only guy that misses going to work. I was the 1st one there & the last to leave & flew all the good days. I miss flying & skydiving the most. As far as bench pressing I weighed 240 & you should be able to bench 1.5 you body weight so I was close to normal. All I enjoy now is target shooting 22s & have a range on the farm. Thinking about getting a drone with the goggles, we'll see.Eric Richardson
