Re: Mageto's for c85-12
Last year at about this time I received 4 LA-4s to repair. I had a stash of new coils so used them in an effort to make the mags like new, new platnium points that I had a stash of, condensers, and most other parts. Both pairs were from Ercoupe owners, one here in Texas and one in New England. Needless to say the cost to the owners was pretty high. The guy here in Texas was happy to get them but the guy in New England never paid me in full. So now, I regret parting with my new unobtainium parts to a deadbeat.
I was still able to get new parts including coils a year ago from Fresno even a couple of new magnet rotors. I have had others wanting me to work on theirs, but after all the time I spent last winter with a return of maybe a couple of dollars per hour of time invested I refused to take on any more.
Most of the new parts I had were from a long time ago from Lou Libee but ones I bought last year were from Fresno. I had stashed coils, condensors etc years ago because I was still operating my Franklin in my Stinson with LA-6 mags which I had for more than 44 years. The Eisemanns were so reliable I never had to use my new parts. In 2012 I installed a Lycoming 180 with Bendix shower of sparks mags.
In my opinion, Bendix are good, expensive mags, Slicks are junk, and Eisemanns are easier to work on than Bendix and as good or better.
