Re: mounting a handheld
Here's a homemade aluminum tray that has served me well the past 10 years in N44305. It sits between pilot and passenger on the seat, quick plug in to external antenna; intercom is canted upward for easy PTT use. I too have the 196 mounted on top of the panel; can be seen in the current Barnstormers ad.

Re: mounting a handheld
Some mounts I've used: http://www.chiefaircraft.com/pilot-s...am-mounts.html http://www.rammount.com/activity/general-aviation#more
Typically a drill down ball panel with connecting arm to the radio cradle but there's other options. Most GPS portables have the option to fit their base to a ball mount base.

Re: mounting a handheld
That is the bracket for mine on the A Pillar just above the pilots wheel. No impact at all on visibility and angled towards the pilot to make it easy to read. You can see the remote ant cable peaking from behind the fairing. It uses only existing fasteners and is solid as a rock. Second one was with the radio just hung up to do testing. Normally the wires all get tucked in out of the way.

I spent a LOT of time making sure the cables COULD NOT get into the aileron cables! Same for the spiral wire going to the PTT on the wheel. No sense having a sexy install just so you can scream on the radio as you crash from fouled controls!

Re: mounting a handheld
I will try and take a photo today. I made a small 'L' bracket and mounted it to a hole under the lip of the upper part of the left glovebox. I then made a bracket for my Icom and one just slips over the other. Extremely simple and clean.Cheers,
Marty
