  • Rob in UK National Press Sun 25 June 2017

I made it into the UK National Press, wow!

    Well the online version anyway!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...ft-first-time/ [scroll half-way down to the red-and-white cockpit view].

The gentleman with glasses in the right hand seat (furthest) is fit-as-a-fiddle 94-year-old Eddie Habberley who flew Spitfires in Burma in the war (and in fact flew his Spitfire from England to Burma...quite a feat back then, when most went on a ship...and he was only 20 years of age or so at the time!) Today he flew me from Northampton to Gloucester in England (and back), although he did allow me to do the take-offs and landings!

It was a very great privilege for me to be involved in such a day, and a humbling experience to be in the company of so many aircrew who put their lives on the line in the War. The Newspaper link above is worth a read.

Rob, That is great congratulations, glad the lady transport pilots were honored too. How did you get connected to Mr. Habberley to gift his flight?

On the video link, a message pops up that it is not available outside the UK due to "rights issues". Maybe there is another link via YouTube or other?

I had the same problem as Mark with the link. Any other way to get it up on the Taylorcraft site? I am a real BoB history buff.

An organisation called "Project Propeller" matches Veterans (and their physical abilities) with pilots & aircraft. History of the reason for starting such an organisation, and previous year's events is here

Thanks Rob, you guys made in the clip! Great gift to Mr. Habberley and the other vets, what fun. Rob, do you know if the transport ladies got a turn at the wheel in their respective rides? They were great quotes in the clip.

I don't know for sure, Mark, but I should expect so.

I flew a few times with a WWII B 17 Pilot around 90. Unfortunately he had dementia. But once in the Airplane it didn't seem to affect his ability to fly. Very enjoyable just letting him fly whever he wanted to go. It ended all too soon. I believe he did 37 missions. Your right Rob, it is a humbling experience. He wore his Army Air Force Jacket. When a B 17 was in town I got to see him in his uniform. He had a son who set up the flights.

Not to be missed! the book is titled " a question of honor" which describes the polish pilots who fled to England , were thought to be "inferior pilots" but who quickly showed their skills by teaching the British pilots how to get the job done, during and after the Battle of Britain. Then sadly , how they were treated after the war. Great book.
