  • Interior floor board and carpet?

    Hi folks,

N44057 has a gold colored carpet and when you pull it up, you have a two piece aluminum sheet floor board. I have a few questions.

First, what was in there when it came from the factory? Seems like most airplanes of the day had wooden floor boards.

Second, I was told that the carpet was a 'kit' interior that you could purchase and this carpet is disintegrating so I really need to get it out of there. I checked Wag Aero and Univair to see if they sell carpet kits for the TC but I could not find it on line. So what do you have in your airplane?

    Thanks,

    JackD

Depending on when your ship was built, aluminium 063" is original. Wood was used on earlier versions, not sure when the factory switched but I think post war are aluminium

I think the switch was sometime in 1946. IIRC someone posted the month a while back. You might try using the search function.

Switch to aluminium floor boards, stringers, door frames, and some other trim pieces occurred in May of 1946 per a factory letter to employees. Of course a letter and practice on the factory floor may not be the same...

Mine are aluminum and the date on the wing spars was June 14, 1946.

OK, so the aluminum floor panels are original. Airtex does seem to have a carpet for $117, although it appears that I will need to remove the rudder pedal assemblies to install the carpet all the way to the front. I certainly don't like taking stuff apart for that reason.

So, what do YOU have in your airplane? Carpet? Or bare (painted) aluminum floor?

Re: Interior floor board and carpet?

I fastened tonneau cover snaps at strategic locations onto the aluminum floor boards. I got a roll of automotive trunk carpet from the local auto store, cut it to fit, and put the matching snaps on it.
I added an aluminum heel plate at the brake pedals because it is a heavy wear area.
This set up won't last forever, but it works OK, it is light weight, and comes in different colors.
                Best Regards,

I would do two pieces one fore and aft of the rudder pedals.

Why not leave out the carpet and the weight?

How about asking them to make a slit from the pedal holes going forward to the fire wall so it fits around the pedals rather than over.

I suspect that they will do that for you. Ask Dodd for help.

That is how I have seen it done.

I have the Airtex carpet. I cut it into 2 pieces and trimmed to fit around rudder pedal assemblies. BTW. I have wooden floorboards. No idea if original. Logbook shows test flight 9-10-1946. 70 yrs, 3 days ago.

Airtex made my carpet it just slids up under the rudder pedals did not have to remove anything. I did send them a paper pattern of my floor because the first one did not fit correct. My floor boards are Texas hiway signs, one with a bullet hole, adds class to Zelda i think.
