    Re: I need an ELT

There is no federal requirement for insurance for Part 91 ops but there is for 135/121 ops. FAR 205 addresses this.

      Thanks Garry,

I was not aware of 135/121 ops.

Insurance costs enough that I could buy a replacement airplane every 10 years, so why bother? Especially when I am a mechanic. Also some states also require it to fly out of their airports but I have not heard of it being enforced....which is funny since most are federally funded and have to follow federal rules..

          Re: I need an ELT

Since I have a heart condition and my -85 is still limited to 1200 gross I will not carry a passenger and could only carry an eighty-pounder anyway. So I asked for pilot only insurance and have no coverage for a passenger. No coverage on the plane itself as I only paid $12K for it. Falcon insurance in So. Cal., $176 a year. It's likely my liability here would be making a forced landing in some farmers crop field.

It's an interesting viewpoint...the cost of hull insurance against the likelihood of claiming against that risk.

Here in the UK, the private pilot community almost always insure the hull, which costs about 5% per annum. So as a comparison to Tim's example:

We would need a replacement every 20 years. We here in the UK don't have a great source of Taylorcraft (they all have to come from America!) so we tend to over-insure the hull value to allow for import costs.

My American Taylorcraft in the US is insured as if it were in the UK (i.e. hull insurance too). It costs me about $800 pa in total for the required liability and hull at $15K. Given that last September I was close to a call to the underwriter, I think it's good value for peace of mind.

For comparison, my Taylorcraft in the UK is insured for GBP26K (say $32K at today's rate) and for GBP7.5M liability (say $10M) and it costs me GBP800 (say $1100) per annum for that protection. I think that is good value, but because I am in a syndicate of four, each of us only pays 1/4 of that.

Our greatest cost is fuel; insurance and hangarage fees pale into insignificance compared with fuel costs.

            Just my opinion.

I have often traded off delta in premium cost versus the deductible amount. Often a higher deductible results in lower premium and the payback period assuming that you have a claim is just a few or four years.
