  • New windows in doors of BC12-D

Hi everyone, I am currently working on replacing the windows in the doors on my BC12D. When i purchased it did not have sliding windows, it looks like someone cut and molded there own piece to fit. I purchased new windows from Wag Aero but im at a loss as to how to install them. If anyone has any pictures or advice regarding which piece(larger or smaller) goes toward the front, what type of felt to use, handles for the sliding part, installation tips etc. i'd really appreciate it. I've googled pictures and learned a little but most of them aren't close enough. Thanks again.

The outer "glass" is in front and inner one is at the rear. I have lots of photos and a pile of sheet metal doors in the hangar. Several guys have used the "woolly" part of Velcro as the slide part support. One of the nicer doors I saw someone had glued a round piece of Plexi about an inch long to the lower front corner of the front glass as a handle. You can put a loop of cord on the door and hook it over the knob to hold it shut, although the Velcro felt does a pretty good job of holding it in place with light friction.
Too bad you are so far away. You would be welcome to browse the pile all you want. Let me know any detail shots you need and I will try to find a door to get a good shot.

I like the tipout windows, then I have someplace to put my arm. Tim

Me too, but the tip out windows don't work well with the sheet metal doors. Do you have the tube doors or the wood ones Tim? I have steel tube on the 45 and wood on the 41. The wood doors are REALLY NICE except they are very complex to build and you have to watch the joints because the glue seems to like to let go. Also the door hinges and windows are attached with wood screws (which I changed to machine screws and "T" nuts) that can pull out with pretty disastrous results! With a few minor mods the wood doors are best in my opinion....worst without the mods.

Tube doors, which are pretty solid. I reskinned them and all is well in the world. But the aluminum tubing for the window frame is getting a little worn, the #4 pk screws don't fit all the holes so some are #6's now to hold the plexiglass to the frame. Tim

Does only the front piece slide and is the other one glued in or is it possible to make both pieces slide? I have access to plenty of velcro so i think ill give it a try. Also if you have pictures of the outside and inside of the door , the glass side of the inside window trim piece and any old windows with their hardware (handles etc.) that is really all I'm looking for. Thanks again i really appreciate your help

Re: New windows in doors of BC12-D

I have seen some where both slide and I think that would be really handy. From looking at the doors I think you would want felt or Velcro "wool" between the pieces of Plexi, top and bottom, to keep one pane from scratching the other. That would cause you to have a small gap that would make for some wind noise. I think you could solve that by putting a thin vertical strip on the outside front of the rear glass and the inside rear of the front glass. When the windows are both closed they would seal against each other, but when open the thin strips wouldn't touch the other glass.
I would NOT put felt top and bottom on both pieces of glass where they touched in the slot the glass slides in. The felt would make it REALLY HARD to move the glass if there was two layers touching except at the vertical seal between the pains.
I will need to get some close up photos of the window slots next time out. These may not show much detail.

I think i now have a picture in my mind of how to put these together, it should be fairly simple to make both pieces slide. Thanks again for the help. I'll try to post some pictures of the project later.
