    all
we propped the new 85-12 last weekend and all went well
now we are onto the battery installation on 29747. does anyone have an opinion or advise as to what battery and were to put it?? Most pictures i could find showed it on the firewall below the relay. i am a little concerned that it could move cg too far forward. any advise or experience would be welcome

    thanks

    Re: Battery Box Location

If you have the extended baggage compartment, the battery should go at the right rear corner; however, if you retained the BC12-65 configuration on 29747, I'm not sure what to tell you. You may need to place a battery box under the baggage sling to make the balance work out.
There is bound to be someone who has a good answer here on the forum.
    Best Regards,

        Paul,

Get the current weight and balance info then have you or your A&P figure out where it should be on your specific airplane.

          Re: Battery Box Location

Use a light weight battery and it is typically not a problem. I am the one that got the batteries approved on the firewall. Tim I would also look into the earthx battery, it only weights 4 lbs....and is a lion battery, not pma'd but a viable option.... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...900_em_1p_0_ti

            Re: Battery Box Location

I suggest putting it back in the factory location behind the seat under the sling. If you are on an extended mount it will need it back there.

My short mount 85 was right in front of the seat, in the middle. I had no starter, but a generator and lights.

                thanks everyone for their experience
looks like i need to get the plane weighed and see were it needs to go
i did retain the short mount on 29747
                thanks again

                  Re: Battery Box Location

I have mounted 2 on the firewalls of F-19's, just order the Burls box that is PMA'd and use the lightest battery you can find. The Odessy is lighter than the Gill, but twice as heavy as the Earth one. Tim

                    Re: Battery Box Location

Not all years had them behind the seat under the baggage sling. The pre war-planes (and a few early post war planes) had them just in front of the kick plate on the floor boards (and YES, they can really get in the way there!).
First photo is a pre-war,second a post-war with the seat sling on the left.

                            Re: Battery Box Location

Not always. My 45 Deluxe it behind the seat but my 41 (and several others I have seen) were all in front. I have seen several where the battery had been moved back but even most of my old photos show it in front. I have never seen a battery on the firewall unless it was moved there, but that doesn't mean it never happened.

From working with batteries for a LOT of years you DO NOT want to put the voltage regulator on the firewall and the battery in the cockpit. The voltage regulator and battery should ALWAYS be close to the same temperature. A hot voltage regulator and a cool battery is a recipe for a cooked battery from over charging the battery.
