    Re: 46 Paint Schemes

If it would help, I'd be happy to draw a mock up of whatever design and colors you are considering. It might help to visualize the end result.

Wow, what a generous offer! Thank you Anthony
I may take you up on it... once I narrow down my thoughts on all this.

        Re: 46 Paint Schemes

Stinson blue which is a metallic and silver was very common on 46 taylorcrafts. There was a 46 Deluxe, I have the remains on one. I say paint it how you like it and go for it. No paint scheme will increase value, but it can hurt resale ability.

          Re: 46 Paint Schemes

I took a little different path to my 45 scheme. LOTS of us were modelers (many still are) so I built the little 13" Comet Taylocraft to test color layouts. This is my "middle of the road" scheme for a 45 (or early 46) Deluxe. The cream color on the model is Diana Cream and is the WRONG color. Taylorcraft Ivory was much different (and much prettier to me). The old samples of Taylorcraft Metallic Blue looks almost exactly the same as a blue Cessna was still using very recently as a trim color. "Metallic" in 1945-6 was NOT what metallic is now. Back then it was just a VERY glossy blue, NOT metal flake and NOT Candy Apple type color.

Kool little airplane. Particularly impressive that you got inflight-inhouse photos

Built hundreds of models myself as a boy and periodically since, still have an RC Pitts in the basement.

You mention Taylorcraft Ivory. Do you know if any of the Randolph whites come close. Whites are tough to choose without seeing a panel painted.

So do you think if I were to pick the deluxe scheme and add trim colour to the fin and stab leading edges it could still be "authentic?"
Like this? I combined the deluxe '46 scheme with the "bird" tail stripe that was used on the planes with the diamond stripe. I liked it better than the solid color tail. I figured it is a combination of two Taylorcraft schemes. Plus I always liked the Taylorcraft tails tripe.

                    Re: 46 Paint Schemes

The Randolph colors are NOT Taylorcraft Ivory. NONE of them. I went to Jim and Dondi and they custom mixed mine. I used an HVLP system to paint my plane. If you need some I have lots left over. I am sure they could mix more to match if it isn't enough, but you would want to mix ALL of the Ivory into one batch (a single large container) since even different cans from the same batch can look a little different when applied.

Can you post a link or photo of your bird so I can get a sense of what the Ivory looks like. White shades are tricky to choose

I will put a photo on here, but computer screens are NOTORIOUS for getting colors wrong. If you send me your mailing address in an IM I will mail you a chunk of fabric with the actual paint on it so you can computer match it.

In going through the Randolph chart the white I'm leaning toward in vestal white but I really don't have a benchmark. I used vestal white on my Cessna but that's Jetglo
