    Re: Rudder bar installation question

    Hi folks,
I am installing the rudder bar and my mechanic is weighing using castle nuts versus lock nuts. Seems like castle nuts would be nearly impossible to access unless the boot cowl was off. I am guessing it had castle nuts originally? Any feedback is appreciated!
    Thanks! Jay

You can access them with boot cowl on, it's not too bad of a project.

          Re: Rudder bar installation question

I think I have done it with castle nuts before, but it has been a while. One trick that helps is take a permanent marker and draw a line on the head of the bolt parallel to the cotter pin hole. It makes getting things lined up easier.

            Re: Rudder bar installation question

The fuselage prints I have show lots of AN320-3 nuts (castellated) maybe for the tubing clamps and other stuff nearby the rudder bar. But back in those days were there any other options for nuts? I'd use something that could later be accessed and removed providing they weren't subject to rotation.

              Re: Rudder bar installation question

If the part that the nut secures is subject to rotation, then a cotter pin is required (except where a rod-end bearing is used). (my rule)

                Re: Rudder bar installation question

If someone needs the prints I have what copies were/are available online and can send them via e-mail. If I load them here the quality suffers so maybe Rob or Tim can do that better here as a Sticky?

                  Re: Rudder bar installation question

These are the bolts I am talking about.
According to the old Taylorcraft parts catalog the rudder bars are held in place with AN365-1032 lock nuts.
Makes sense as they are holding down the brackets that hold the rudder bar and are not subject to rotation.
                  Thanks! Jay

                    Re: Rudder bar installation question

The nuts specified apparently vary by the vintage and source of the parts catalog and prints. The 1985 "Lock Haven" catalog - likely the "F" series? - does list the AN365-1032 nuts. The other part sources I have (2) and prints (1 - early Post WWII) show AN320-3's, or nothing specific I can see.

                    Superseded by whatever works?
