Does anyone make or know of someone that makes nice seat cushions for a Taylorcraft F-19? Mine are about wore out and the upholstery shop I went to was lost as how to make them. MAC

    Re: Seat Cushions

    Mac,

I have a guy locally (Rochester, NY) who makes aircraft cushions. I have the original cushions from my F21 (real thin but in good shape) that could be used for a pattern. My new cushions are thicker Oregon Aero foam. If you want, I can get you a contact number and he could use my old cushions for a pattern. Send me a PM if that will work for you.

There is a gal located on the Poplar Grove(IL) airpark that does world class upholstery of aircraft. My son has the nicest custom leather seats and side panels ever fitted to a Cessna 140.

As I look at different pictures of seat cushions on this site it looks like the seat belt slot is in the bottom cushion in most pictures but on my cushions the slot is in the back cushion which is thinner. Just wondering if that is where it should be or if it should be in the thicker bottom cushion. MAC

            Hi MAC,

I have been around Taylorcrafts since about 1968 and I have never seen one with the belt slot on the rear cushion.

Perhaps some one swapped the cushions?

I have no way to verify that the back cushion is always thinner but it does not sound correct to me.

I think my last set had a thicker back cushion but cannot verify.

              Re: Seat Cushions

My plane is a F-19 that I bought when it had 400 hours on it so I am assuming that these were the original cushions. As to which cushion should be where I do not know but to me it is a lot more comfortable to have the thicker cushion on the bottom. I'm sure someone out there knows which way they were designed to be used. MAC

The bottom cushion usually has a skirt that goes along the front and around the corner on each side. The skirt is maybe 2" long. It's purpose is to cover the wood seat sling bar.

The back cushion usually has a skirt that only goes along the top, not around the corner and there are usually snaps (~4) in the skirt that join it to the baggage sling.

These are some ways to get an idea about which was supposed to be where.

I recall that F21 cushions that I had were quite thin.

Airtex will give you a thick bottom.

                Hope this helps.

I thought it was the "All you can eat" joint down the street that gave me a thick bottom. Glad to know it was Airtex that did me in. Now I can go back to eating there!

Food wasn't that good at Airtex anyway. ;-)

I am repairing a '46 BC12D. I bought a wrecked F19 for parts. The seat cushions and seat setup are the same on the F-19 and the BC12D.

Years ago my dad came up with a original 1941 Deluxe seat cushion. he used that to develop a pattern. He has sold many sets of cushions over the years. The quality is top notch. The original had the notch for the seatbelts in the seat cushion, not the back.

Here is a picture of one of his seats but it is not the best picture.

The Bakers sent me a sketch of their seats years ago and I used that for these in my 41. Not a real complex project. Hardest part was finding Mohair and Leatherette to make them from. The antique car guys have all the materials you will need. I also used foam instead of the original horse hair.

                          Mac,

I've got F21 seat cushions just laying around since my plane has Airtex thicker bottom and back cushions. The seat belts are in between the cushions and the shoulder harnesses are over the back. The originals are in real nice shape in black vinyl. want them?

I'm thinking about going with Oregon Aero cushions with leather, hoping that they are more durable. I like the thick bottom [3 in] and will probably have it built like drude had Airtex build his. As to keeping them in place I see some have tie straps, snaps or Velcro that do that and I know they need something. Mine came as two pieces and they slid all over the place until I had them sewed together. The seat belt slot I think works best in the bottom and a thinner[1.5 in] cushion is all that is needed for a back cushion thus allowing for a tad bit more room. MAC
