  • Oshkosh 2015

I'm thinking about flying the TCraft to Oshkosh. 845 miles.
I only want to fly about 400 miles a day. So I plan to fly 400 the first day, 400 the second day, then a short hop early on the third day of flying. Then 3 days at Oshkosh. Tent camping by the airplane.
Any suggestions on things to not miss while I'm there?

I manage the airport at KOLY. We are a little farther than your 400 mile first day goal, but just about right on line for the trip. If we have hangar space you can put your airplane inside over night. We have a van to get you to town, or you can pitch a tent. I'm not sure what fuel prices will be then, but I can do a better price on fuel cash or check. I have fuel jugs if you want to get fuel from town.

      Tim,

If you can make it to Olney, IL (OLY) where Tom is at ^^^^^^, it is a nice airport and he will take good care of you. I bought my first Taylorcraft there eleven years ago.

As far as Airventure goes, lots of airplanes and things to see, and buy. Pioneer Airport and the museum are nice, especially if you want to get in out of the sun and into A/C for awhile. The four large hangers have vendors. My understanding is Jerry Yagen's de Haviland Mosquito will be there. I saw it in Virginia Beach at his museum. It is an incredible airplane and the only flying Mosquito in the world at this time. I also like looking at everyone else's airplanes in the Vintage area and you will want to swing through the Warbirds area, too. Lots to see and do.
      Cheers,
      Marty

        Re: Oshkosh 2015

        Thanks, 3Dreaming,
That's a very generous offer. As you say, your airport is right on the way.
I thought about camping (since I'll have my tent and sleeping bag with me), but decided that I need to sleep in hotels at my enroute stops to charge my batteries, shower and save my body for the camping at OSH.
I like the idea of having more time on my second day (I've promised rides to friends at two different airports further North).
I'll buy 100LL at the field. I don't want to haul fuel.
I'll FlightPlan for KOLY. I'm looking forward to meeting you in person.

Depending on when you are traveling I might be in Oshkosh too. I will make sure you are taken care of even if I am not there.

            Tim,
When are you planning your third day ("a short hop early on the third day")? Or don't you know yet?

              Hi Rob,
Weather permitting, I hope to fly into OSH in the morning of Tuesday July 21. Are you planning to be there this year?

I am. Flights, car hire, etc all booked. It would be good to meet up again, and to have a look at your Taylorcraft.

                PM on its way.

Mike closed his message with a good point . I have talked with several Forum members via Private Messages, but haven't had the pleasure of meeting anyone personally. I know I owe Rob Lees and a few others a big thank you for all their help (read: a beer on me). Since a number of us are attending this year's EAAirventure, do we want to set up a sign-in sheet at the Taylorcraft table in the Red Barn? If so inclined, we can list our name(s) and suggestion on where and when we might hook up.

Good suggestion, Peter - and Roger all the help this forum has afforded.

                          Re: Tempest

Hi all! I'm going to Oshkosh for the first time. I will not be flying 44100 since it is still far from ready. I want to meet as many T-Crafteres as possible. Is there going to be a get together? I need to take lots of pictures, since 44100 was in pieces when I bought it.

I'm looking forward to going there (been planning literally since last year), but feel I may be a bit overwhelmed with all the forums, etc.

                          Can't wait!
