  • Bigger wing tanks on F-19

Can the bigger, 9 gallon, wing tanks approved for the L2 be adapted and approved for the F-19? Or, is there a mod for installation of bigger wing tanks and the removal of the nose tank? (I'm thinking that 24 gallons, 21 useable, is not very much fuel for a 0-200 engine T-craft.)

Is 4.5 hours endurance not adequate?

Sometimes you want to go places where fuel is not available and you can't get any to go back home. We have a saying in Alaska that "The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire". There are a lot of places that I like to go where fuel is not available and carrying five gallons gas cans in the back seat of my L2 is not something I like to do. The L2 only holds 14 gallons total. That's why I have Terry working on a redesign of the larger L2 tanks to make the installation a lot quicker and easier. I don't doubt that when he is finished he will probably make them available for the rest of the fleet.

I don't know much about how approvals from one model to another plays out with the faa so this might not be helpful to you.
I have the straight F-21 that only had the 12 gal. nose and one 6 gal. in each wing for 21 usable.
At some time in it's life the faa approved the addition of another additional 6gal. tank in each wing ,giving it a total of 33 gal. usable.
I don't know if my 337 will be of any help to you on your F-19 but if it will let me know.

The tech ref. section has a 337 to install 2 more 6 gallon tanks in each wing, I did it about 19 years ago. Tim

We need to find a way to get bigger tanks approved. It is the easiest way to haul fuel and if you don't need or don't want that much fuel don't fill the tanks full. The wing of the F-19 is identical to the to the wing that the factory put 21 gallon tanks in. I realize that the factory tanks were junk but other tanks have been made that work great if we could just get the whole thing legally approved.

                Dave,

I am not so sure of that I think that the spar is deeper on the newer wing. I recall comparing a set around 1992 and noticed that. I may still have the info will look this week.

I found my old notes and I also have an old spar. The F21 spar was 5-15/16" deep and the B model spar is 5-9/16" deep.

I was going by the information that Darrell Romick, Chief Engineer for Taylorcraft, sent to me in a letter in June of 1995 that said that the F21A was the first model approved for the two 20 gallon fuel system. He also said that the earlier models, Model 19, F19 and the F21 had the same size spar as the F21A.

                      Hi Dave,

Its my misunderstanding. I a was comparing B models spars to F21 spars, not F19 to F21 as you are. Sorry about that. I would believe what ever Darrell said he was a clever guy.
