  • Rough Taxi Stopped Engine

Hi Tribe, been a while but hey... The flying has been great

Anyway, I tried looking this up with a bunch of hits but not what I was looking for.

I landed on a pretty rough stretch yesterday, and when I was taxiing back (at a slow speed, but bouncing and waddling all over the place) the engine sputtered and shut down. I got out, waved to the cows as they darted away over the hill took in a breath of air and pulled the prop through till she started again (usually the first blade, but probably the 5th or 6th on this try). Taxi about another 100 yards bouncing and bobbling trying to get over to the take-off stretch at the base of the hill and she stopped again. I pulled a bunch of blades and she wouldn't start. Pushed the last 50 ' over to the water trough (take-off stretch), drained the gascolator, opened the throttle, pulled the carb heat and went for a walk. 15 minutes later, I came back, set everything and pulled 5-6 blades to get her to start again.

So... did I like foam the float bowls or flood the engine or something? Any guesses why she did that? She fires first blade every time and I've never-ever had an engine shut down.

Let me know what you think if you get a chance

    Thanks all - happy flying

    JJ

I think with all the bouncing the float needle couldn't stay seated, and let to much fuel into the carb causing it to flood.

Hmmm... I like that 3D, I think that makes pretty good sense.

Cmon, here have a look. PS - very tough to figure out where the squirrel holes are in the midst of the million piles of cow dung when doing low recon.
Landing is from the right to the left, note the palm trees really help judging the wind.
I just turned around to taxi back to the gate (which is just to the right outside of the picture)
This was the first time the engine just stopped.

LOVE the CAP logos! Do you have a tracing or template for them? My 41 was CAP in the war along the mid-Atlantic. Always wanted to see what she would look like with the circle/triangle/prop logo.

        Hank

By the way, the bouncing float does make sense.

My first guess would have been that you dislodged a few drops of water and the engine ate those. Did you collect a sample when you drained the sump?

This has been bugging me, if you dying when taxiing, then what happens in turbulence? What carburetor are you running? How full is your header tank? what tire pressure are you running? How old are your bungies? Are your gear legs flexing over the bumps? Have you tried clearing the carburetor when you are taxiing? Do you open the cowling when you try to restart to get the heat out?

I run 850's because I have landed on terrain like you are on but it never died before that...when I did, I would be doing some serious trouble shooting..Tim

I think you will find that taxiing on ground like that will cause far higher loads than what you would get in turbulence.

                  Re: Rough Taxi Stopped Engine

Sorry for the delay Gents - Busy time of the year for me.

LOL - Itty bitty tires that had me laughing. Yeah, they don't quite do it for me.
The tires are at 20 LBS, the bungees are less than a year. The G meter read from +3 to -1 and I flew over landing terrain for the first 5 minutes after take-off just waiting to have to land again (but it never came).
I did a full run-up and then some prior to take-off, but everything checked out. Header tank was 3/4full. I did prop the cowl open when I went for my 15 minute walk to let her settle down.
Oh - and Hank - I bought her with the CAP logos, but they are .... I think a huge sticker. Still love that the CAP guys salute me - I do my best to return the respect.

What had me laughing was when I drove up to the ranch the day after and I had blown dried cow chips all over the baserock driveway...

And 850's... hmmm.... I really like that idea - my tires are kinda worn out anyway....kind of.

I run about 10-12 psi in my 850's, I would wait for the desser bush 850's come out, they are supposed to get TSO'd but I don't know when. http://www.desser.com/store/products...TH-TUNDRA.html
Do you know what carb you have? Have you ever had it apart? What needle and seat? Tim

                        Ya know - I think it's a Holley...
j/k - I really don't know - it does have the mixture control (er on/partial off control)
I really REALLY want 850's. I'll be looking for the desser bush 850's like you said
Thanks for the heads up on that Tim

Hank - I can easily make you a template for them though. Anything up to about 36"

                            Re: Rough Taxi Stopped Engine

Most of it should be pretty easy. If you can get me the length of one side of the triangles for the wing and fuselage plus a tracing of one prop blade I could generate the rest of the logo. If you know the color numbers it would help a lot too.

                            Hank

A good clear straight on photo of a prop blade would work fine. I could just scale it if the edge of a triangle is in the photo too.
