      You can also use a couple of steel washers the same thickness as the middle spring at the front. My 45 has a square piece of steel with a hole in it and the 41 had two steel washers.
      The other thing is I have seen some of the tails with a piece of fiber material between the aft strap and the springs. It is supposed to be a piece of hard rubber. The fiber material holds water against the spring and rusts the snot out of it!

        My middle spring does have a slot in it as shown above. I tighten the front bolt snug... not torqued.... and backed it off 1/2 turn and cotter pinned it. I did this allow the middle spring to slide. I looked at a J-3 Cub today and it has a similar spring set up. My IA was OK with this.

        I measured the play in the tail wheel... with the wheel held fixed the steering arm moves a total of 5/16" when measured at the hole for the springs. What is the play on a new Lang tail wheel?
