  • aluminum trim tab?

Slowly going through a couple of trailer loads of Taylorcraft parts I acquired last summer. One complete airframe, enough bits to make another set of wings, continental parts, etc.

Dug out a couple of uncovered trim tabs this morning and then I noticed this. Very well made and fits perfect. I've never seen an aluminum trim tab on a taylorcraft...do the clip-wing projects use them? (have a few other bits that might have been intended for one).

My 46 BC12D-1 had an aluminum elevator trim tab that looked just like that.

      Marv,

Interesting...my current tab is fine but the pin is a bit worn... I was considering throwing primer and paint on this one and installing it...has a new and much better pin, so it is of course a "safety" issue...and it's just kinda neat. But, as usual, my question is legal in nature. Probably isn't "approved" is it? ;-)

It's a factory tab, just metal vs. the fabric-covered wood, both were used. The '41 Deluxe used a metal elevator tab also, but a different shape.

Both of our 46's use that tab.

My 41 is smaller, I would like to take one of my extra elevators and convert it to one like in the pic. Tim

I have that same trim tab on Serial 10076 (Oct46), a previous one Serial 10074 also had that trim tab, it is factory original.

                        Re: aluminum trim tab?

Happy to hear you folks have alum trim tabs. I am restoring a 46 BC12D. I received it from the owner as a pile of parts.
Left HS is painted. Alum tab is painted. I find what looks like a piece of 1/8" brass rod which appears to be the hinge pin. If so, What holds it in place? I see no holes in the rod. It does have a 1/2" or so bend at the inboard end. Appreciate any help. Thanks, Larry

                          Re: aluminum trim tab?

                          Hi Larry,
On the outboard end there should be hole for a small cotter pin that pins the axle rod to the elevator.

Check out your elevator maybe you will see the hole.

I will make a picture later.

                          Dave

                            Thanks Dave,
There is no hole in the rod, but I can drill one and find the elevator hole with a needle. This will solve my problem. Larry

Sometimes there will be a hole drilled in the trim tab skin on the inboard end. You safety the "L" end to the hole.
