  • Vortax Generatos

My '46 BC12-D-65 has a stall speed of about 43mph and cruise about 98 mph. I am considering adding some Micro Aerodynamics VG's to the wings and HS (fabric new in '08) for lower So and other reported advantages. Anyone with experience with adding VG's and issues with the fabric?

    Re: Vortax Generatos

It seems like Yellow Duck installed them on his BC12-D many years ago. But he dosn't frequent this forum any longer.
A quick search on this forum for "Vortex Generator" revealed a bunch of threads including this one below:

Yep, installed, no issues. Make sure your dope/fabric is good, the glue will peel the dope off if its not. Tim

Well, I know why my search did not show any posts for VortAx generators! Where is spellcheck when you need it. Anyway it sounds like not much "guaranteed" performance enhancement for the costs and unknowns. I am glad I flight/ tested the stall speed for my bird since it is 8 mph higher than the TC literature/POH. Still easy to fly for a TW newbie.
        Thanks for the input guys.

You will enjoy the slow speed controlability, that is where I noticed the benifit. I do know of a fellow taylorcrafter who installed them on only 1 wing, it was epoch...Tim

If your indicated speed is that high I bet you will find that the static line is not done correctly.

Good point, but it was 50 deg and low humidity. Either way I am ahead of the J3's!

The UK Light Aircraft Association have just authorised the fitting of VG's to my F22A. It took a lot of getting there I might add I must say I am doing it with some trepidation and I just hope it works out The thought of having to get the things off again scares me rigid! having said that I could do with something ( apart from more skill of course! ) to assist the low speed handling so I am going to give it a go

The LAA are quite nervous about fitting VG's as it apparently can have quite a dramatic effect on the handling qualities on some aircraft and the engineer at the LAA who has approved my MOD requires a good deal of before and after data, plus it being flown by two seperate authorised Test Pilots so I will report back in due course!

I just have to spray paint the pesky things now before I let myself loose with the glue

Robert easy to paint 2 inch masking tape stick the vg's to the tape and set on a board or card board box thumb tack of clamp the tape down and spray them let dry and glue this way no paint gets on the glue surface. my vg's have been on for two years with no problems and they do help at slow speed you will like them.

Wow, I guess that the hundreds of other taylorcrafts that have them were in dire straights when flying...the F22 is not that different than the bc series...Tim

Not sure if your joking or not, but will try and make it more clear. Take a section of 2 inch wide sticky tape and place it sticky side up and pin it to a board so it is tight. (not flapping around) Place the side of the VG that will go against the wing on the sticky tape. This will hold them in place for painting. When finished painting remove them from the sticky tape, and install them on the airplane.

Thanks both, replied in haste without thinking it through! yes I understand exactly what was meant! Now off to the market for tape and tacks! It certainly looks a good way of preventing the paint getting on the areas of the vg's to be glued.

Cvavon, As a matter of interest what glue did you use? The one which came in the kit, in my case Locktite 330 or some other one? The one you used certainly seems to have been effective.
