    Re: Anyone looking at?

Try pointing that out to some of the FAA types. The mind set is all problems can be fixed with a million or two of technology. Easy to spend money when it isn't yours. The reaction when some of them hear I don't have to have a Transponder or radio because I don't have an electrical system is hilarious. First they say, if I didn't have an electrical system, I couldn't even start the engine. When I tell them I hand prop they look at me like I have three heads.
The guys who actually HAVE a pilots Cert is completely different, but there are SO MANY in the federal bureaucracy who are regulating us who have NO IDEA what an airplane really is or how it works! I run into people all the time who believe an airplane can't fly without a radio and if the engine stops the pane falls immediately from the sky. Even the "PILOT" FAA guys are getting outnumbered by the MBAs with NO aviation experience.
There are SO MANY who think you will immediately be lost without a "controller" to tell you where to go and just don't get it that you don't need electronics to provide navigation and separation. My favorite comment for the cockpit glass mandate guys is the best piece of nav and separation glass is the WINDSHIELD! TRY LOOKING OUT THROUGH IT!

Too many think ANYTHING can be solved by just writing a new regulation!

The 2020 mandate is still over 5 years out. I think there will be many changes in equipment before the date gets here. I wouldn't be surprised if the date gets pushed back by the FAA. For me personally I wouldn't even think about doing the upgrade now except for the free inflight weather.

But you can get that for a lot less with fore flight. http://www.foreflight.com/stratus
And take it with you on more than one airplane.

          Re: Anyone looking at?

I was looking at something that I could interface with my garmin GPS to get weather info on the fly, I do a LOT of long flights and having that info is helpful if I don't have to pay for a subscription. I also need the GPS to give the 1093 out to the mode S transponder. So far none has a single unit that will do that with the 396 gps. I am hoping that it will come out someday. Tim

            Re: Anyone looking at?

I've been flying with a Garmin GDL-39 feeding my 796. It works well - enough that I dropped my XM WX. I can Bluetooth it to my iPad too but don't normally. Garmin provides cables to hook the GDL-39 to their various portables including the 396. Prior to the 796 I had a 396 with XM WX. The GDL should display the ADSB WX just as well as the XM WX. It's very limited on the number of traffic targets it will display on the 396. But then the GDL-39 is IN only and any traffic you get is leeched off of others. It doesn't solve the OUT problem but would get you inflight weather.

Is there a Garmin subscription fee with the 39?
