  • DUAL BRAKES and Philanthropy collide!

    To all
I want to pass on some great news that is in development regarding this thread topic.

    Background:
I was approached awhile back to provide DER support for a group called 88 Charlies. You may have heard about them. They're based out of Palmyra Airport, WI. These are a group of adult aviators who give their time as a non-profit to teach young kids and young adults about vintage airplanes. Their current restoration project is a Taylorcraft. They are planning to install DUAL BRAKES so they can most easily teach kids to fly in the plane. They need DER support.

When I discovered their mission, I suggested that the kids become involved somehow in this paperwork endeavor. The first thing on the task list is that we will need a good drawing. As you all probably know, there are some sketches floating around, but nothing that can be submitted and FAA approved by today's standards. I asked if any of the kids might have the skills to create such a drawing. As things have worked out, one energetic young man who is a Junior in High School has stepped up to create an AutoCAD drawing for the CLAMP-ON DUAL BRAKE setup. Working with the adults there and using some rough sketches and photos they found, they have REVERSE ENGINEERED the design and are getting close to having a final drawing.

This young man has done an outstanding job. So good in fact that I have decided to reward him for his efforts. This is all leading to a philanthropic opportunity for us as Taylorcraft owners. Some things will need to get finalized and this may take a few more months but here is the basic outline for what is to come.

    *****************************

    1) I have committed to make a donation of $200 into a scholarship fund to be managed by the 88 charlies non-profit group. In addition, I am working with the student to finalize the drawings and I plan to provide a DER approval at no charge. This will allow them to finish their airplane modification via 337.

Here is where this gets better.

    2) We will come up with a means to make this drawing available to other Taylorcraft owners in exchange for a donation to the 88 charlies scholarship fund.

    3) I will provide DER approvals at no cost to those who have need to do the modification and who make a donation and use the same drawing.

    *****************************

As I said... this is going to take a few more months for the drawing to get finished and for the scholarship fund to get established. But in my view, this is a win-win for all involved. The kids at 88 charlies program will benefit. And I believe by making this available, more and more Taylorcrafts can be fitted with dual brakes. This can only boost involvement by more young people in aviation (and Taylorcrafts) as it will be easier to give dual instruction in Taylorcrafts.

As this project gets done and more come along for 88 Charlies... we hope to do more and hopefully this scholarship program will grow. I hope you'll make plans to support it. Watch this thread for more information soon.

Re: DUAL BRAKES and Philanthropy collide!

Terry, this is a great project! Any chance a mechanical lock out can be included at the pedals to prevent them from being used? I have factory RH brakes (welded in and original) on the 45. I always worry about a passenger like a young eagle applying the brakes on landing and putting me on my back. I would really like a clamp that would prevent anyone from pushing the RH brakes that can be taken in and out.
I would be interested in feedback from anyone who thinks this is a bad idea for some reason I haven't seen. Might want to do a second thread and keep the part about inclusion with the 337 here.

That is great Terry and information I am sure can be used as that question crops up here often. That is also very nice of you to volunteer your time and knowledge. It is also great to know there are kids who are interested in old planes and take the time to learn and work on them. And, apparently talented kids, too!
      Cheers,

If the part from Forrest doesn't work out, I'm definitely in on this.

Re: DUAL BRAKES and Philanthropy collide!

I just heard about 88 charlies because of a local news article posted on another forum I visit.

BTW, I think my dad has factory drawings for the dual brake set up. He installed a kit that was purchased from Dorothy Ferris to install in his 1941.

I don't know if it is of any relevance but the F22 series had dual hydraulic brakes fitted as standard?

Sounds good I might be interested. Let me know when you get it worked out. Keep up the good work.

                    Hi Terry,
I am interested. I bought a wrecked F19 a few years ago and the factory dual brakes on it are are partially welded to the structure and partially clamped. The pulleys on the crossover tube are clamped.
I had planned on cutting the parts out of the F19 framework and welding to clamps to clamp instead of welding to the structure.
But, since my project is probably a year or two away yet, I can sure wait and participate in what you are doing . It sounds like a very good thing to do for the kids in WI.

Re: DUAL BRAKES and Philanthropy collide!

Terry, count me in to help out, the BC12-D I have has cast aluminum brake pedals with the name "Ruppert" cast i them, while working on the P-38 that became "Glacier Girl", there was a lot of aluminum casting work being done, and my plane was in the "project" stage, so I took the brake pedals out and put them in with a load of patterns going to casting, sometime later I had 4 cast aluminum brake pedals, so two are back in the original position and it's no ones business where the other two are located , but I sure would like to get an approval, just in case they ended up someplace that needed approval, the TOC newsletter had a picture of one of the ailerons hanging from the stabilizer of the P-38, I called it the worlds most expensive drying rack, let me know, gary

I am more partial to period correct styling, that is why I shudder at the thought of cast aluminum brake pedals in a taylorcraft...that looks more correct in a Cessna or Bonanza....Tim

The dual brake setup that Terry started this thread with is the original Taylorcraft heel brake setup for the right side.
What you pictured was about another thread about going to hydraulic brakes.
The concepts are not related. My question was what has happened since this thread originated?
