Not sure what paperwork you are referring to. There is nothing in the aircraft records that indicates the cowling configuration. If there is a source for this info based on S/N I haven't been able to find it. I do see various cowling/carb intake configurations in the many photos posted on this site and many others. My Airbox has a Bracket filter housing installed so that's not original.

There is no evidence of camloc receptacles in the nose cowl so, assuming for a second the nose cowl is original (possible), that tells me it did not have the small intake fairing. The Lower cowling is clearly a flat panel which I suspect was fabricated when the Champ exhausts we added. My intention is to go back to the original exhaust configuration.

The cowl will be specific to the engine and aircraft model. The records won't show what cowl is needed but it will show you what the original equipment was and that will tell us what cowl went with it. Kind of like a jig saw puzzle. If you can put the edges together it helps you build the picture with all the small parts. In this case the engine used and the year/model will tell us if the original lower cowl was a single curve or compound curve.
I have never seen an early model with the Bracket filter as original equipment. In fact as far as I know they didn't even exist prior to the war. They WERE added to most planes, but unfortunately they were rarely properly documented. As far as the paperwork is concerned, they were never added and having one on there without the paper is a conformity violation. (Nice thing is, I have never run into an FAA rep at any level who officially "saw" it.) To do it right, you really need to get the paperwork in order.
