  • Post War Tail Size.

Could someone with a post war bird post their tail size... oh this is going down hill faster than I can type it...

Could someone with a post war bird, please let me know what the length and width of your rudder, elevator, and stabilizers are?

    Thanks,
    Eric

    Re: Post War Tail Size.

Nice correction, Eric. I go to the gym and my wife says mine is a nice size.

I don't have those handy, but I can run to the hangar and measure if no one jumps in.
    Cheers,
    Marty

        Re: Post War Tail Size.

Does anyone have a post war they could measure? I have heard the rudder is a different size. And perhaps more desirable for floats. It would be nice to put some numbers to these things. The size of L2 tails would be interesting too.

          Re: Post War Tail Size.

I have laid the pre and post war rudders on top of each other. The pre-war planes had larger rudders. Have to get to the airport to measure them. Additional rudder would be nice with floats, but the size difference isn't huge.

Crap, Eric. My memory is horrible. Hence the reason I have Post-It notes everywhere. I was just at the hangar on Friday. I am writing a note now and will do that for you if no one else beats me to it.

              Re: Post War Tail Size.

Okay, Eric, I went to the hangar after Easter brunch and these are the results. I did not measure to the eighth inch, these are close measurements.

              Stabilizer width 27"
              Stabilizer length 58 1/2"

              Elevator width 18"
              Elevator length 58 1/2"

              Fin height 35"
Fin length 32" (This is approximate as my fin is installed and covered)

              Rudder height 51 1/2"
              Rudder width 22 1/2"

              Hope this helps.
              Cheers,
              Marty

                Re: Post War Tail Size.

I think his pre war has a post war fin and rudder.

If he puts floats on he has to put that bottom fin on-I can't remember the name of it.

                    Ventral fin?

Got to be careful too. There are a LOT of planes out there with different tail sections, different fuselages and strange set ups. You used to be able to get away with some "imaginative" repairs! They work, but they are NOT all original configurations!

                      Re: Post War Tail Size.

Interesting. Not enough difference to say there is any.

My pre war tail pieces are 3 hinge, and look to have never been modified. So I am pretty confident they are what they appear to be. But a second set of measurements wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for getting those measurements Marty.

                          Re: Post War Tail Size.

I don't have a pre war here to measure, so this is coming from memory. The vertical fin is about 4" shorter, and has 4" less down the leading edge. It ends about where the forward fin attachment is. The rudder is about the same area as a post war , but since it is 4" shorter it has a longer cord. If I had thought about it I would have stopped and measured my dads airplane yesterday.

                            I just measured my '39:

Fin is 31" tall, 32" wide
                            Rudder is 47 1/2" tall, 26" wide
Stab and elevator 58" half span, stab is 26 1/2" chord, elevator is 18" chord

Now thats interesting. That is closer to what I expected the difference to be.

Where does the L2 fall into this? Did they have three hinges, with the taller tail?

I have another Rudder in the shed I'll have to measure when I get back home.
