    Re: Video Clips

The filters will handle the prop effect, if you get the right ones. There seem to be some aftermarket ones for the Hero 3, but i have a Hero 2, so not as much choice. Here's an option for the Hero 2, for another $100 though-

      Re: Video Clips

      Andrew:

The product I use is #299 from Lee Filters. Spec in the link says it's a 4 stop filter, a 1.2 ND filter (I don't know if this means 20% reduction).

I've used my GoPro2 for several flights now, and to reduce the prop effects I use a filter inside the case to "fool" the shutter.

I purchased a couple of square feet of flat ND filter (as used in the film lighting industry) and using a large diameter hole punch, punched out flat discs to fit inside my GoPro housing.

Even with wrinkles when inserted, you can't see the difference, but it reduces those horrible prop effects.

      Here's the tools you need:

      1. A roll of ND filter

      2. A wooden board

      3. A hammer of the necessary weight and a hole punch of the necessary diameter.

      Here's the method:

      4. Hit the hole punch with the hammer over the wooden board...don't forget to put the ND film between the hole punch & the board.

      5. Remove the nice ND filter disc.

      6. Insert it, wrinkles & all, into your GoPro 1 or 2 housing.

Here's my GoPro2 case before & after putting in the film.

      Job done.

        Re: Video Clips

Rob, if you look at the link in my post #40 you'll see that that's basically what I've got, I just paid them 12 dollars to cut the disc. It is convex however so fits well in the housing. Also, it's listed as a 10% filter (transmittance, or light allowed through), while according to the chart on Wiki yours is a 6.25%, which would be darker, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutral_density_filter . So maybe doubling them up would do the trick after all-
I've tried to find ND film at the local camera supply places but nobody has it, so ordered the disc on Amazon.

                          Oops..missed this one, sorry!

I generally use 1080HD at 30fps if I want to view the video on a super-duper TV, but commonly I use 760 for regular Youtube and/or computer viewing.

The video below is my GoPro2 (but is of my friend Greg flying his Pietenpol at Brodhead) and was shot at 760*30:

To do slo-mo, you need 60fps. On my GoPro2, you can only do this at 720 or 960 wide.

Timelapse is quite good fun; I set the camera to take a picture every 30 seconds or so (experimentation is required), and use a free utility (VideoMach) to stitch them into a high-speed movie.
