    Re: Video Clips

Just saw this being offered for mounting options and also filtering out the prop blur.

Ryan, did you get a chance to take a picture of your mount? Thanks!
    Cheers,
    Marty

      Re: Video Clips

I must apologize Marty, I have been there three time and dammit if I didn't forget. I have been experimenting further out on the strut. There I am using the gopro outdoor edition helmet strap wrapped around the strut. I do wrap it with duck tape for security. I promise those pics!

Not a problem, Ryan. I do the same thing all the time. Thanks!

            Re: Video Clips

Marty, I finally had the combination of being at he airport and a good memory. I have used two mounts. The first is a bicycle handle bar mount that my dad got in an Emerson camera. I have seen one for sale (amazon, eBay?) online. I use that on the jury strut. The handle bar mount requires the gopro tripod attachment piece. The second is the gopro helmet mount that came in the outdoor edition. The mount is readily available at stores. I attach it at at the strut fitting. I wrap duct tape around the straps for reinforcement. Not sure if it needs it, but makes me feel better.

Not Taylorcraft, but I was playing with my new GoPro on Friday, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywOv...Vc-Q4w&index=1 , using the head mount. Need to angle it down a little, but the footage was OK-

Here's a clip from mine. For a short while I manufactured and sold the camera mount. It had 3 axis (pan/tilt/roll) and was electronically stabilized. Mounted to the jury strut.

I have been using a Contour Roam mounted to the forward strut with a flex strap. Works great!

Another note, I bought one of these, advertised to help stop wavy prop, and it hardly made any difference at all

I thought it would be the same as what Rob was using, but apparently not. Maybe I need to stack two of them.

Andrew: I use cheap ND (Neutral Density) filter material; it works a charm to stop wavy prop.

Here's the problem without a ND filter (1 minute video):

Here is the same flight a few minutes later with a ND filter on the same camera, still only one minute long:

Rob, the RageCam filter is listed as an ND filter, but I notice that it says "10% Filter", so I think it may just not be dark enough. Don't suppose you know what per cent filter is the stuff you're using?

Apparently the trick is to just fool the camera into using a slower shutter speed to blur the prop by lowering the amount of light getting to the lense. Here's a still photo of my dad's Tiger Moth that I did with the same camera, under an overcast sky:

Note the prop is just blurred, and not wavy like it shows up as in bright sunlight (no filter on in that photo)

Hey Gang...thought I would chime in. I am a big fan of the Pedco Ultra-Clamp for mounting your camera anywhere on the plane. I have placed it in all sorts of places with no problems. It is inexpensive and available on Amazon.

As far as the "prop effect"...we're kind of stuck with it with the "rolling shutter". There are cameras that have a different imaging system (AVCHD) that eliminates the effect, but they are much more expensive. I agree with the suggestion of mounting the camera away from the view of the prop. Here are a couple of examples:

Keep filming and posting...It's the next best thing to going for a flight!
