  • A Taylorcrafter flown West

    Hello All,

With regrets I must pass along news that one of our own has passed and flown West, Carl Carson. While I did not get to meet him or have the pleasure of flying with him, he was a friend of Dad's living in NE Iowa. And they did get to share adventures with many!

News of his services this weekend can be found at this link.

Carl E. Carson, 84, of Cedar Rapids died Monday October 8, 2018 at Country View Senior Living in North Liberty. Memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday at First Lutheran Church. Rev. Leroy Bradway will officiate. Private family inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a visitation on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM. Survivors include his wife, Mary, two daughters Marcia (Randy) Loan of Cosgrove, Karen (Mike) Beer of West Des Moines, and a son Dave (Philippa) of Bellevue, Washington. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Ben (Nikki) Hines, Dylan Hines, Chelsea Hines, Ryan (Kelsey) Beer, Megan (Mitch) Beckert, and Trevor and Grant Carson; two great grandchildren, Oscar and Goldie Hines, and a sister-in-law Jeanne Carson of Troy Mills. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gene. Carl was born on March 31, 1934 in Troy Mills, the son of Willard and Kristine Schonberg Carson. He received both his undergraduate degree and masters from the University of Northern Iowa.  Carl taught and was a principal in the Cedar Rapids Community School District for over 36 years, retiring in 1996. Carl proudly served in the Army in Korea. He enjoyed time spent with his beloved family as well as flying his 1940 Tayorcraft airplane for over 50 years.  Carl will be forever remembered as a wonderful and caring husband, father, grandfather, teacher and friend. Memorial donations may be given to First Lutheran Church.

His Taylorcraft journeys started with his dad and at a tender young age. I hope all his future flights are CAVU and with a tailwind.

Thank you for sharing that , I knew Carl well , I belonged to a flying club with him where we owned a share in a J3 Cub and a Cessna 140 for many years , also rode in his Pre war Taylorcraft that he owned for decades and fully restored, and his Dad originally bought brand new and brought to Iowa to there farm. He was a gentle man and will be missed.

Any chance one of his kids will keep up the line of ownership? Lot of history there. A sad loss.

I hope so but I doubt it as he was the only one that had an interest in flying although his wife used to fly with him . Actually I heard a while back that when he went into the nursing home, his Taylorcraft was sold, But in the Children's Museum in Iowa City a place for kids and Aviation sponsored by Rockwell Collins , There is a kids mockup Taylorcraft with a computer simulator for flying That has His N number and photos of his Taylorcrfat and a description of the Taylorcraft airplane on it. Kinda nice to see.

Carl's Taylorcraft is in good hands, but not one of his children. Just a few weeks ago it had landed at all of the lower 48 (all of them in the last three years). Mike will be along at some point.

Yes, definitely a sad week with Carl's passing. He always had a smile and positive attitude. He and wife Mary became friends easily to many people, including me. We flew together on occasion and spent a number of MAAC fly-ins with them at Brodhead, and some AAA fly-ins at Blakesburg.

It was April of 2015 that Carl called me and asked if I would be interested in taking over the care of NC29624. He knew that his time had come to pass the airplane that his dad owned before him to another. I was honored, and it's been a pleasure to fly for the past three years. Rob, Jim, Mark and I have been flying together since then, making one or two X/C trips a year to lots of interesting locations from Seattle to Key West, and Southern California to Maine, with stops in every one of the lower 48 in NC29624 along the way. The start of this adventure actually was planned by Jim and I at the passing of Mark's father, Lee Bowden. It was natural to ask Rob to buy a Taylorcraft to fly in the US and join us, and Mark has been able to fly with us most of the time is his dad's beautiful Taylorcraft.

Attached is a picture of Carl's dad with the Taylorcraft in it's early years, and one that Rob took over the Hudson River and Statue of Liberty on our flight to Maine last month.

Just for fun, this short clip was taken by a friend at Manatee airport in Florida as we left for Key West last November. It's not that often you see four Taylorcrafts departing together.

Great photos Mike, do you know what year that picture of Carl's dad was taken? The file name has 1941, would that been when they got her?

For everyone its a bit hard to see in the Florida takeoff video due to the sun angle but in sequence it was Jim, Rob, me and Mike in 624.

That was a great Florida morning to fly and here are a couple resized still shots to share from preflight as well as some nice of Carl and 624 that Dad had taken before she went back to the current blue scheme. Carl's photos were taken at Independence, IA airport KIIB.

When Carls Dad bought his Taylorcraft he bought it in 1942 or 43 in an eastern state. Penn I believe and he had to get a special waiver to fly it across the US as the war was going on and private flying was being curtailed. Im not sure of any other details but Carls life story was in a small book for viewing at His visitation a couple of weeks ago and I thought I should clarify that , Mike the one who bought his Taylorcraft may know more.

Yes Walter, 1943 is the year that Carl's dad, Willard purchased 29624 according to the documentation I have. I don't know why the file name of the picture is labeled 1941 though Mark. Carl told me that his dad also picked up a 1941 project around the same time, maybe it was just a picture name mix up.

29624 was a December 8, 1940 airplane. I think he put the chrome cowling trim from the '41 project on it, but that's just my guess. I don't believe it would have came from the factory that way, and the B/W photo shows it wasn't on it at the time also, as it is in the two pictures Mark attached show. It would be interesting for me to know more about the B/W photo though. I went through all of the prior log books and didn't see anything about Willard Carson picking it up, just different handwriting without signatures around that time period.

Thanks for making that clear for me
