Marty, I have one of the mag switches in the 1940 picture if anyone wants to try and make a replica. I made one for the 45 with a more modern mag switch behind the panel. You fill the lever with epoxy and embed the key in the lever. When the key is in the switch it looks completely original. When you leave the plane you pull the lever and key out and the mag switch is locked (of course all you have to do is cut the P lead to start the engine, but all the key does is keep honest people honest anyway. For safety sake I STRONGLY recommend making up a “Y” harness with 3 alligator clips and clipping them to the two P lead posts on the mags and the engine case to ground the mags out under the cowl. At an airshow or fly in if someone turns your mag switch on the engine won’t start when some knuckle head moves the prop.

I can’t tell if the rectangular plate on the panel is engraved or silk screened. Anyone have an original for a pattern and a drawing?

Anyone know what the two markings are above the two round knobs on the left? How about the placard below the right wheel? I don’t know if anyone even needs placards for a 40, but if the information is available we need to pull it together from an existing plane NOW for the guys who will need it later. Who has an original 40 panel they can take rubbings from?

Tom, the panel in the picture has a few things different from the period photos I have (the one in your picture looks better than the originals). For those who want factory original the differences I see are;

The wheels weren’t wrapped in the nice leather from the factory

The Mag switch in the picture has been changed for a modern key one (I have a drawing of that switch plate if anyone wants one like the one in the picture)

The original center instrument panel wood wasn’t wood. It was faux painted metal (I have the drawing if you have the painting talent…real wood looks like, well, wood!)

In the original pictures of a 41 the “Do Not Exceed” placard is in the center and covers a screw that holds the bottom of the panel to the airframe.

The original 41 had a 6 o’clock altimeter (knob at the bottom). Good luck finding a good one!

Last difference I see is the window vent is on the door window. Almost all of them are now, but the old pictures all show them on the windscreens at the top (on the 4 piece front the windshield is the front piece and the two side pieces are windscreens). Of course very few planes have 4 piece glass any more so the door window location makes sense.

I am REALLY impressed with the hand pulls at the top of the door hinge! I have seen them in the old pictures but there is nothing on my plane to connect them to! If anyone knows where this plane is I would REALLY like to know how to attach those!

Notice too that this plane HAS the fuel clip. Haven’t gotten back to making more of those yet,…. soon. I spent the day today fitting up the boot cowl again. MAN there is a lot of junk up under there to fit in! Everything has to be right before the fasteners go back in.

Hank, the pictures of the BL were of my airplane. It was a 1941 built in April. The wqriting above the knobs was for carb heat and cabin heat. This was per the original panel. No holes for placars there. The never exceed speed is printed on the throttle plate. The only placard on the panel is for the control wheel universal.
The deluxe is dad's airplane. It was biult in January 1941, but like I said the type certificate does not show approval till April of 41. There are several things that were a little different from some of the later airplanes. Hand made chrome trim that does not have Taylorcraft stamped in it. Fancier window latches. While you are correct on most of the points you made. The location of the placard and the 131 mph is what that airplane had originally. It is hard to say what is correct because so many of these airplanes had little differences between them because thay were all hand made. Tom

That's your dads plane? I have a picture of it hanging in my office for inspiration! It is the same colors as mine was from the factory. Your dad sent me the drawings for the seats years ago and I used them to sew up a beautiful set. I will have to post photos of mine when it is all together too. Your dads pictures kept me going in some of the "dark times" on my plane, just knowing how good she COULD look.
If you ever get to peek above the "A" pillar (door hinge tube) and see how those straps connect I will make a set. Looks (and feels) like they would be a really useful addition for getting in and out! I would sew a couple of pieces of cable in them so you could really hang on them going through the door.

Hank, there is a small diameter tube welded to the door post on a angle that they attach to. I don't remember what kind of fitting is on the strap, so I'll have to check. Dad has been working on his after the mishap a while back. The fuselage has been recovered and is back in color. Still have the wings to do. Tom

I got the most recent set of "Do Not Exceed 140 MPH" placards last night and took them to the post office today. If you DO NOT get one and think you ordered one within a week I probably did not ever get your full address. I have a number of people on the spreadsheet who said they were interested but never sent their addresses.
The next batch will run $10 each and will have a self adhesive strip on the back (who says inflation isn't bad in a recession! If not, why does my supplier raise his prices?)

the originals were cut out with just a little of the "silver" showing around the edge. Be careful what you cut it with not to bend it. I did one with a moto tool and it got HOT! Some careful "snipping" outside the line and a small jewelers file seemed to work best. If you try to hit the final line on the first cut it will bend.

Bench grinders are NOT a good idea either! Yes, I tried several ways to do it faster, none worked as well and just taking the time.
