  • Engraved "DO NOT EXCEED 140 M.P.H." Placards

I have the engraved "DO NOT EXCEED 140 M.P.H." placards IN MY HANDS and am ready to mail them to those who wanted them. I need confirmed mailing addresses to send them out. I know this took a long time and I hope it will have been worth the wait. These logos had the advantage of being the second mouse at the trap and we had almost no waste. Because of that the price was a lot less than the compass logos. The DNE 140 placards are $8 each. Because this has taken so long and the impending availability of the embossed type VNE placards no one is going to be held to buying one based on past contact. I am putting a list on here of those who have shown interest but could well have missed someone.
Remember, these are the ENGRAVED placards, NOT the embossed ones, and so far I only have the 140 M.P.H ones ready to mail. Make sure of the speed your plane is limited to. DIFFERENT MODELS AND YEARS HAD DIFFERENT SPEEDS!!!!! This is ONLY the 140 MPH ENGRAVED ones.

If you want one, send your mailing address to hjarrett2 at cox dot net and I will start mailing them out.

The people I was holding one for are,
Michael Jones, Craig Bailey, Gai Silvano, Buell Powell, Bob Gustafson, John Sipley, Terry Bowden, Bob Anderson and Will, who I only know as Will and Skipilot.

Remember, if you need a different speed, let me know. If your plane needs an embossed placard, you gotta go to BRAND X. I know I want one of his for my 45!

    Thanks guys.
    Hank

Sorry bout that. A photo should be on the first post for each item from now on. The only difference between the two in the photo is the bottom one has been trimmed.
On a slightly different point, I can't send the placard unless you send your address! Some of you forgot to send your mailing address.

OK now the $64 dollar question. Which is proper for what aircraft? Engraved or embossed, I need for both 1941 Deluxe and 1946 both BC's. Larry

Re: Engraved "DO NOT EXCEED 140 M.P.H." Placards

I dug through a bunch of old advertisements from 1941 and looked at the instrument panels with a magnifying glass. It appears that the originals in 1941 were made of a bunch of tiny dots.
Actually, some of the post war ads looked like they were embossed (I haven't found any from 1945, but the 46 advertisements look embossed). The pre war Deluxe panels (with the instrument inserts) looked distinctly different to me. I knew they had the equipment before the war to do the engraving and it was cheap back then so I took a leap of faith. Somewhere along the line Taylorcraft got the equipment to make embossed placards and having looked at how they did things back then I am betting they used up all of the engraved ones before they started using the embossed ones. That would explain why some had the residue and a mark for where the 140 MPH placard was and yet the trim indicator still had an embossed plate on it. They used up any engraved trim position indicators and went to embossed when they were gone. They still probably had engraved 140 MPH placards left and used them on the 41 Deluxe. The 140MPH placard also went over the bottom center panel attach screw and an embossed one would have been destroyed every time the screw was removed. An engraved one could be popped off and put back on.
Later, in the "Dorthy" era they went from embossed placards to silk screen metal (actually more like thick foil) placards, and finally towards the end sticky back printed paper.
These are just my "best guess" for how the transitions happened. What we REALLY need is someone with an ORIGINAL panel with the placards still attached. My original, never redone 45 panel (NC-43196) had what looked like silk screened markings directly on the panel. They are still mostly readable, but that plane was built right after the war and is FULL of strange stuff. It had marks on the fuselage where the attach for a flipper trim was cut off and had a factory skylight in two triangles from the center of the headliner out to the wing roots. Even the wing ribs are different from the regular post war planes. They are stamped ribs, but NOT the same as the 46.
Who has a pre war plane with original placards that can be traced to a specific N number or SN?
          Hank

Or, you could just pick what you like, who but us nit-pickers would ever know?

My Dad's 41 deluxe has the 131 never exceed placard even though the type certificate says 140. Funny thing is the airplane was built 3 months before the type certificate was approved. I think his placard is embossed. Tom

Can you post a picture? All the pictures I have seen are just too low resolution to be sure. Is the placard over the bottom mount screw on yours?

It was mounted right below the Left control shaft just off the corner of the instrument panel center cut out. You can see it in the May 1990 issue of Sport Aviation, though you can't read the placard. Tom

Hi Hank, Can you reserve a 140MPH winged plackard for me as well?
                        Thanks, Mack Dobkins TF 1019.

                          Hank,

I didn't forget you, I had to move my daughter into her new apartment today. I will try to get that posted tomorrow.

                            Mack,
I have you on the list and will be mailing the second batch this week. I sent out the whole stock of 140 MPH placards Saturday and had to order 10 more. The engraver is supposed to have them done before next weekend.

                              Hank and Tom,

Sorry, the image I had was from the October 1994 Vintage Airplane. Not sure if it will help, but here it is.
